The village grew after the Toledo, Ann Arbor and North Michigan Railroad reached it in the winter of 1886-87; a general store and post office built by Schuyler Wrigglesworth in 1897 and a hotel built by H.D. Gilland in 1901 were among its businesses.

Agriculture dominates the economy; Cohoctah is described as the largest of Livingston County's farming communities, with most township land in farm use and soils formed in alluvium on the Shiawassee River floodplain. The community historically functioned as a grain shipping point, growing up around a grain elevator served by the Toledo, Ann Arbor and North Michigan Railroad.

Culture and community. The township contains three unincorporated communities: Cohoctah, Cohoctah Center, and Oak Grove. Cohoctah holds an annual Fourth of July parade noted locally for being viewable twice as it doubles back through the village. Many of the village's original late-19th and early-20th-century buildings, including the old store, hotel, and church, still stand near the intersection of West Cohoctah Road and Oak Grove Road.

What makes Cohoctah distinct. The name Cohoctah is believed to come from a Native American word (and possibly a former chief) said to mean 'many trees in water.' It was an old stagecoach rest stop on the Howell-to-Linden route, and many of its 19th-century buildings survive, making it a stop for Michigan back-roads history seekers. The village once carried the informal nickname 'Sprungtown' after longtime resident Isaac Sprung.
