History. Incorporated as a borough on May 22, 1888 by an act of the New Jersey Legislature, based on a referendum held that same day. Named for the Collings family, whose farmland (held since the 1680s) made up most of the borough; the Collings-Knight House was built in 1824 by Edward Zane Collings. In 1888, businessman Edward Collings Knight donated the land for the 70-acre Knight Park in the center of town.
