Comstock Charter Township hugs the Kalamazoo River just east of Kalamazoo, a place where Michigan's craft-beer industry and its greenhouse industry both put down deep roots. It was named for early landowner Horace H. Comstock, whose marriage into the Cooper family tied this stretch of the river to novelist James Fenimore Cooper. Today it is best known nationally as the home of Bell's Brewery and as a self-styled 'Bedding Plant Capital of the World.'

AppWT serves Comstock Township (Comstock Charter Township) and the surrounding Michigan area from Livonia, Michigan.

About Comstock Township (Comstock Charter Township)

Also known as. Bedding Plant Capital of the World. James Fenimore Cooper Country. 'A Community with Opportunity' (township motto).

History. The survey area (Township 2 South, Range 10 West) was first surveyed in January 1827 by Robert M. Clark; first settler William Tolland arrived in 1829 but never bought land. Land entries were recorded in 1831 for Horace H. Comstock, Caleb Eldred, Thomas W. Merrill, and others. The first sawmill in Kalamazoo County opened along Comstock Creek in 1831, and a gristmill followed in 1832. Comstock Township was organized by the Territorial Legislature in 1834, originally also containing Charleston and Climax townships, which were later set off (Climax in 1837, Charleston in 1838). Namesake Horace H. Comstock married Sarah Sabina Cooper, a niece of author James Fenimore Cooper; Cooper's visits helped inspire his novel 'The Oak Openings,' and neighboring Cooper Township was renamed for Sarah. It became a charter township in 1964.

Local economy. Calls itself the 'Bedding Plant Capital of the World,' home to the largest bedding-plant cooperative in the United States. Bell's Brewery runs its main production plant here; founded by Larry Bell (homebrew shop 1983, first beer 1985), a 2012 Comstock expansion raised capacity from 180,000 to 500,000 barrels a year, making it the largest brew house in Michigan. Midlink Business Park is a roughly 340-acre multi-use commercial park on the site of a former General Motors Fisher Body plant that closed in 1998.

Culture and community. Bell's Brewery, tied to its Eccentric Cafe brewpub, produces flagship beers including Two Hearted Ale (American IPA), Oberon (summer wheat ale), and Amber Ale. The township's brewing identity draws visitors to the Comstock production campus and adjacent Kalamazoo taproom. Local recreation centers on the Kalamazoo River and Morrow Lake.

What makes Comstock Township (Comstock Charter Township) distinct. Novelist James Fenimore Cooper's ties to Horace Comstock's home inspired his novel 'The Oak Openings,' and neighboring Cooper Township is named after Comstock's wife (Cooper's niece). Bell's Two Hearted Ale was ranked the #1 beer in America by the American Homebrewers Association from 2017 to 2019. The Comstock ZIP code 49041 offers only P.O. box service, with no street delivery.
