Web Design for Coventry, England

Coventry is a Midlands city in the West Midlands of England, once one of medieval England's wealthiest cloth towns and later the cradle of Britain's bicycle and motor industries. Devastated by German bombing in 1940, it rebuilt around Sir Basil Spence's modernist cathedral and became a symbol of peace and reconciliation. It carries the legends of Lady Godiva and Peeping Tom, gave the world 2-Tone ska, and was named UK City of Culture for 2021.

About Coventry

Also known as. Motor City. City of Three Spires. City of Peace and Reconciliation. The Sky Blues (Coventry City FC).

History. Coventry began as a Saxon settlement; in 1043 Leofric, Earl of Mercia, and his wife Lady Godiva founded a monastery there. In the Middle Ages the city became one of England's most important and prosperous towns on the strength of its cloth and textiles trade. During the Wars of the Roses, Henry VI and Margaret of Anjou moved the royal court to Coventry, making it effectively the country's capital until 1459. In the 18th and 19th centuries the economy shifted to silk-ribbon weaving and then watch and clock making, in which Coventry was one of Britain's three main centres alongside Prescot and Clerkenwell. From the 1880s Coventry became a world leader in bicycle manufacture and then the motor industry, home to firms such as Jaguar, Rover, Triumph and Standard. The Coventry Blitz of November 1940 destroyed much of the medieval city centre, prompting large-scale modernist rebuilding in the 1950s and 1960s.

Local economy. Historically the economy moved from cloth to silk-ribbon weaving, then to watch and clock making. Coventry became a global centre of bicycle and then car manufacturing, with Jaguar, Triumph, Rover and Standard-Triumph based in or near the city, earning the nickname 'Motor City'. The motor industry slumped during the 1970s and 1980s, bringing major plant closures and high unemployment. The modern economy is focused on business services, research and design, with Coventry University and the University of Warwick among the largest employers. Coventry Transport Museum reflects this heritage, housing the largest publicly owned collection of British-made road vehicles in the world.

Culture and community. In the late 1970s and early 1980s Coventry was the birthplace of the multiracial 2-Tone movement, blending Jamaican ska, reggae and rocksteady with punk and new wave, led by local bands The Specials and The Selecter. The Specials' 1981 single 'Ghost Town', a bleak commentary on recession and urban decay, was written about their home city; the car from its video is displayed in the Coventry Transport Museum. Coventry Cathedral hosts music and arts events and stands as a global symbol of post-war reconciliation. The city was named UK City of Culture for 2021, hosting a year-long programme of festivals and events. Coventry is a self-styled 'city of peace and reconciliation', twinned with more than two dozen cities worldwide including Dresden and Volgograd (formerly Stalingrad).

What makes Coventry distinct. The legend of Lady Godiva riding naked through Coventry in protest at her husband's taxes emerged around 250 years after her death; Godiva was a real 11th-century noblewoman, but the naked ride appears to be a later invention. The word 'Peeping Tom', now a term for a voyeur, comes from the man said to have secretly watched Lady Godiva's ride. The phrase 'sent to Coventry', meaning to be ostracised, is linked to the hostile treatment of captured Royalists imprisoned in the Parliamentarian stronghold during the English Civil War. Frank Whittle, the RAF officer credited with inventing the turbojet engine, was born in Coventry and patented his jet engine design in 1930. Coventry was twinned with Dresden and Stalingrad (Volgograd) as gestures of peace after both cities suffered wartime destruction, pioneering the modern town-twinning movement. Coventry silk ribbon weaving once employed around half the town between 1700 and the 1860s.
