Web Design for Cranston, Rhode Island

Cranston is Rhode Island's second-largest city, a Providence-bordering blend of colonial waterfront, dense Italian-American neighborhoods, and mid-century suburb. Carved from Providence in 1754 and named for a colonial governor, it gave the world Del's Frozen Lemonade and holds one of the largest Italian-American populations of any US city. Pawtuxet Village on its southern edge is among the oldest settlements in New England.

AppWT works with Cranston, RI businesses from Livonia, Michigan, mostly online and travelling as needed.

About Cranston

Also known as. Originally named 'Pawtuxet' (before 1754). Residents are called Cranstonians.

History. Much of the land was part of the 1638 Pawtuxet Purchase, bought by Roger Williams from the Narragansett; William Arnold was the first settler. The Town of Cranston was created in 1754 from the part of Providence north of the Pawtuxet River, named for either Governor Samuel Cranston, Rhode Island's longest-serving governor, or his grandson Thomas Cranston. The town strongly backed the Patriot cause; town meetings at the Arnold and Knight taverns voted to oppose Britain's Coercive Acts. In 1869 the state bought Cranston farmland that became the site of a state prison, a mental hospital, a poor home, and training schools. Cranston became a city on March 10, 1910, and by 2020 reached 82,934 residents, second-largest in the state.

Local economy. Del's Frozen Lemonade opened its first stand in Cranston in 1948 and is still headquartered in the city. Jewelry maker Alex and Ani and Coastway Community Bank based their corporate headquarters in Cranston. Historic manufacturing base in textiles, jewelry, machinery, food products, and metals. The state's Adult Correctional Institutions and other state facilities occupy former Cranston farmland, a significant institutional employer. Primarily a residential suburb of Providence with major retail anchored by Garden City Center.

Culture and community. One of the largest Italian-American communities in the US, about 38% of residents, many descended from immigrants from Itri who settled in the Knightsville neighborhood in the early 1900s. St. Mary's Feast has been celebrated in Knightsville each July since 1905, with processions, vendors, and a carnival. Gaspee Days, held since 1965 and centered in Pawtuxet Village (which straddles Cranston and Warwick), commemorates the 1772 burning of the British schooner HMS Gaspee. Garden City Center is a longstanding open-air shopping destination with dozens of stores.

What makes Cranston distinct. Narragansett Trotting Park in Cranston is often cited as the site of the first automobile race on a track in America, held September 7, 1896. Rhode Island's main prison complex sits on farmland the state bought from Cranston in 1869.
