History. Platted in 1881 and named for a nearby icy waterfall ("crystal falls") on the Paint River; a post office opened in 1885. Solomon D. Hollister and German-born George Runkel arrived in 1880, discovered iron-ore outcrops along the Paint River, and formed the Crystal Falls Iron Company. The Fairbanks (Paint River) mine opened in 1882 and ran until 1913, shipping 382,089 tons of ore; the Chicago & North-Western Railroad reached town in June 1882. Iron County was split off from Marquette County in 1885, named for its most important natural resource. Crystal Falls won the county seat away from rival Iron River in an 1889 vote by a margin of only about five votes. The Iron County Courthouse, a Richardsonian Romanesque landmark designed by architect J.C. Clancy, was built in 1890 on the town's highest hill.
Local economy. Founded on iron-ore mining, with roughly six active mines shipping tens of thousands of tons of ore in the district's first year. Timber and logging were the other historic mainstay of the local economy. The economy has since shifted toward outdoor tourism, hunting, fishing, and the Bewabic/Runkle Lake recreation draw.
