Daly City sits just south of San Francisco as the northernmost city in San Mateo County, the fog-wrapped 'Gateway to the Peninsula.' Grown from 1906 earthquake refugees into Henry Doelger's tract-home suburb of Westlake, it is now widely known as the 'Pinoy Capital' for having one of the highest concentrations of Filipino Americans of any midsized city in North America.

About Daly City
Also known as. Gateway to the Peninsula. Pinoy Capital. The New Filipinotown.
History. Named for businessman and landowner John Donald Daly. After the April 18, 1906, San Francisco earthquake, whose epicenter lay just offshore near Mussel Rock, displaced residents fled south to area ranches including Daly's. Incorporated on March 18, 1911, by a razor-thin vote of 132 to 130. It stayed small until the late 1940s, when developer Henry Doelger built Westlake, an early large-tract planned suburb, including the Westlake Shopping Center. Serramonte was developed starting in 1963 by Fred and Carl Gellert's Suburban Realty Company on a former dairy ranch, and the Cow Palace was annexed the same year.
Local economy. Retail is the major industry, anchored by centers such as Serramonte Center, Westlake Shopping Center, and the Pacific Plaza development. A bedroom and commuter community for San Francisco, tied into BART transit. Strategic location and transit access driving ongoing commercial development.
Culture and community. One of the highest concentrations of Filipino Americans of any midsized city in North America, about 40.7 percent of residents as of the 2010 census, earning it the 'Pinoy Capital' nickname; Filipinos moved in heavily in the 1970s after fair-housing reforms opened affordable suburban homes. A dense landscape of Filipino restaurants, bakeries, and businesses. The Cow Palace, host to the annual Grand National Rodeo, Horse, and Stock Show, plus historic Beatles concerts, early Golden State Warriors and San Jose Sharks games, and two Republican National Conventions (1956 and 1964).
What makes Daly City distinct. Westlake inspired Malvina Reynolds' 1962 folk song 'Little Boxes,' which she reportedly conceived while driving through Daly City. The San Andreas Fault runs along the base of the Mussel Rock cliff, and the 1906 earthquake's epicenter sat just offshore of the city. Fog blankets the coastal side (Westlake, St. Francis Heights) year-round while inland neighborhoods like Broadmoor and Crocker see more sun. The Cow Palace literally sits on the city line, with its grounds shared between Daly City and San Francisco.
Daly City is a densely populated suburb just south of San Francisco, known for its foggy climate and one of the largest Filipino American communities in the United States.
