About Darby
History. Seven Quaker families led by John Blunston settled Darby in 1682; the name derives from Derby, the county town of Derbyshire, England, where many early settlers originated. The Darby Library Company was organized on March 10, 1743 by 29 Quakers as a subscription library, with botanist John Bartram helping arrange the purchase of 45 volumes from London; it became free to the public in 1898. Darby was incorporated as a borough on May 3, 1853, and the arrival of the Philadelphia and Darby Railroad trolley line in 1858 helped turn it into a streetcar suburb.
Local economy. Darby's early economy was built on agriculture and mills powered by Darby Creek; today it is a mix of small businesses, retail, and service work, with the Data USA profile reporting roughly 3,800 employed residents. Many residents commute to jobs in Philadelphia, the nearby airport area, and elsewhere in Delaware County.
Culture and community. The Darby Free Library bills itself as America's oldest public library in continuous service, operating since 1743; its current building on Main Street was erected in 1872. The Darby Friends Meeting House was built in 1805, and the adjacent Darby Friends Burial Ground, opened in 1682, is cited as the oldest cemetery in continuous use in Pennsylvania. Darby Fire Company No. 1 is one of the borough's long-standing community institutions.
What makes Darby distinct. Comedian and actor W.C. Fields was born in Darby in 1880. Botanist John Bartram, whose family was tied to the Darby area, established what is regarded as the oldest surviving botanical garden in the United States. Frank Sheeran, the labor figure portrayed by Robert De Niro in the film The Irishman, was associated with Darby.
