About Delhi Charter Township (Holt)

History. The township's first permanent settlers, John Norris and Fred Luther, arrived in 1837. Delhi Township was created on February 16, 1842, by act of the Michigan Legislature, a date locals mark as 'Enactment Day,' when the Alaiedon Township quadrant was split into Delhi, Lansing, and Meridian townships. By 1850 the township held 402 residents, and by 1857 the settlement of Delhi Center (now Holt) had a post office, hotel, tavern, and several other businesses. The Delhi Center post office was renamed 'Holt' on February 10, 1860, to end confusion with Delhi Mills in Washtenaw County; the new name honored Joseph Holt, U.S. Postmaster General under President Buchanan. Delhi became a charter township on September 18, 1961; the 2020 census recorded 27,710 residents, up 7.1% from 2010.

Local economy. Ranks as the fifth-largest municipality in the Lansing-East Lansing metropolitan area, functioning largely as a residential suburb of the state capital. The Michigan State University Horticulture Teaching and Research Center operates within the township at 3291 College Road, Holt, and parts of the MSU campus extend into township boundaries. Holt Public Schools is a major local institution and employer. Served by the Capital Area Transportation Authority (CATA) and positioned among Interstate 96, US-127, and M-99.

Culture and community. The Holt Farmers Market operates out of the former Delhi Township fire department building at 2150 Cedar Street, selling local produce, meats, baked goods, Amish products, gourmet coffee, and artisan jewelry, metalwork, and painting. Holt High School's teams are the Rams; the school used a 'Ramblers' mascot from around 1935 before evolving into the Rams.
