History. The township was named after DeWitt Clinton, Governor of New York (1817-1822 and 1825-1828), best known for championing the Erie Canal. Captain David Scott moved from Ann Arbor in 1833, became the first settler, and platted the land. The State Legislature formally created DeWitt Township on March 23, 1836; the first township meeting was held April 8, 1836, at Scott's house, where Welcome J. Partelo was named first supervisor. The original township was rapidly carved up: Watertown split off in 1837, and Bingham and Bath (formerly Ossowa) in 1839, with Olive following in 1841. DeWitt served as the county seat of Clinton County until December 1857, when the seat moved to St. Johns. The Lansing, St. Johns and St. Louis Railway opened the community to new prosperity in the early 1900s. The township became a charter township on November 7, 1978; the separate Village of DeWitt (incorporated 1929) became the City of DeWitt in 1965.
Local economy. The township's economy is tied to the Greater Lansing capital region, with rapid growth along Business US-127 and near Interstate 69. Capital Region International Airport (LAN) sits in the township's southwest corner. After a 2011 Next Michigan Development Zone designation, the area pursued an 'aerotropolis' airport-centered development strategy. The township has used multiple '425 Agreements' (intergovernmental land-and-tax contracts) with East Lansing (~1,200 acres, 2001), Bath Township (2002), and Lansing (~2,000 acres including the airport, 2011). It functions as a bedroom community for Lansing and East Lansing, served largely by DeWitt Public Schools.
Culture and community. The DeWitt Ox Roast, held in downtown DeWitt every summer since 1946, is the signature community festival, with a parade, carnival, live entertainment, and an arts festival (its 79th annual edition falls in 2026). The Looking Glass River winds through downtown DeWitt and gives its name to the Looking Glass Brewing Company and the 5.2-acre Looking Glass Riverfront Park, which offers picnic areas, canoe access, and a river observation deck. Olympic gymnast Jordyn Wieber, born in DeWitt on July 12, 1995, was the 2011 world all-around champion and won team gold with the 'Fierce Five' at the 2012 London Olympics. The township is closely tied to Michigan State University's orbit through its proximity to East Lansing.
