Web Design for Dover, Delaware
Dover is Delaware's capital and the seat of Kent County, a colonial court town William Penn laid out around a historic central square called The Green. It punches far above its size: home to Dover Air Force Base and the U.S. military's only stateside mortuary, the NASCAR 'Monster Mile' at Dover Motor Speedway, the Firefly Music Festival, and the factory heritage behind the spacesuits worn on the moon.

About Dover
History. Established in 1683 by William Penn as the court town for Kent County and formally laid out in 1717, named for Dover in Kent, England. Became Delaware's capital in 1777 (moved from New Castle) for its central, inland location safe from British raiders on the Delaware River, made permanent by 1781. Home of Caesar Rodney, the Delaware patriot and signer of the Declaration of Independence who made a famous overnight ride to Philadelphia. On December 7, 1787, Delaware became the first state to ratify the U.S. Constitution, earning the state its 'First State' identity. Served as an Underground Railroad stop, sitting between slaveholding Maryland and free Pennsylvania and New Jersey. On August 4, 2020, an EF2 tornado tracked 35.78 miles across the area, the longest-tracked tornado in Delaware history, causing no deaths.
Local economy. Dover Air Force Base is a major economic and strategic anchor, home to two airlift wings and the U.S. military's only mortuary in the continental United States, which receives and processes fallen service members. Nearby ILC Dover (Frederica) built the Apollo and Skylab spacesuits and Space Shuttle EMU; its A7L suit was worn by Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on Apollo 11. Food manufacturing includes a Kraft plant that has produced Jell-O since production moved to Dover from LeRoy, New York, in 1964, and a Procter & Gamble plant making Pampers wipes. State government (as the capital) and a canning legacy that became Kent County's principal industry after the Delaware Railroad reached Dover in 1856.
Culture and community. The Firefly Music Festival, a major East Coast festival, has been held at Dover Motor Speedway since 2012. NASCAR races at Dover Motor Speedway, the concrete 'Monster Mile,' draw tens of thousands of spectators on race weekends. An Amish community of roughly 1,650 people in 11 church districts farms west of town and inspires the annual Amish Country Bike Tour each September. The Schwartz Center for the Arts occupies a restored 1904 opera house downtown.
What makes Dover distinct. Dover is one of only four U.S. state capitals with no Interstate highway access, alongside Pierre (SD), Jefferson City (MO), and Juneau (AK). It is the only U.S. state capital served by a volunteer fire department. Dover Air Force Base houses the nation's only stateside military mortuary, the point where many fallen American service members return home. The spacesuits worn on the Apollo moon landings were hand-sewn near Dover by ILC Dover, a company with roots in the Playtex garment business.
