Dowagiac is a small Cass County city in southwest Michigan whose name comes from the Potawatomi word 'dewje'og,' meaning 'fishing [near home] water.' Once billed the 'Furnace City of America,' it was an outsized manufacturing town for its size, home to the Round Oak Stove Company and the Heddon fishing-lure empire. Today it is the headquarters city of the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi and a walkable arts town with a busy downtown theater and sculpture-lined streets.
AppWT serves Dowagiac and the surrounding Michigan area from Livonia, Michigan.
About Dowagiac
Also known as. The Grand Old City. Furnace City of America (historical).
History. Named from the Potawatomi word 'dewje'og' ('fishing near home water'); the region was ceded by the Potawatomi, Chippewa and Ottawa in the 1821 Treaty of Chicago. Platted in 1848 by Nicholas Cheesborough and Jacob Benson when the Michigan Central Railroad pushed through and needed a depot and water stop near the creek; incorporated as a village in 1863 and a city in 1877. On October 1, 1854, Dowagiac was the destination of the very first 'Orphan Train' of children sent west from New York City by the Children's Aid Society. Grew into a manufacturing center late in the 19th century, hosting four furnace/stove companies and earning the label 'Furnace City of America.' Is the seat of government of the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians, and the city sits within the band's reservation.
Local economy. Round Oak Stove Company, founded 1871 by Philo D. Beckwith, was the city's dominant industrial employer through the early 20th century. Heddon (James Heddon & Sons), founded 1902, grew into the world's largest maker of artificial fishing lures and was headquartered in Dowagiac. Southwestern Michigan College, a two-year college with on-campus housing, is a major local institution. Served by Amtrak (daily trains toward Chicago and Detroit) and the Dowagiac Municipal Airport, supporting commuting and freight ties to the South Bend metro area.
Culture and community. The Dogwood Fine Arts Festival, running since the 1990s, brings authors, musicians and commissioned public sculptures to town each May. The Beckwith Theatre Company, formed in 1990, stages plays and musicals in a historic 1925 Neo-Gothic building downtown. Downtown is dotted with commissioned outdoor sculptures tied to the Dogwood Festival's public-art program. Notable people with Dowagiac roots include Tony Award-winning actress Judith Ivey, U.S. Senator William Alden Smith, New Mexico Governor David Cargo, and Titanic survivor Dickinson Bishop.
What makes Dowagiac distinct. Because telephone operators struggled to pronounce 'Dowagiac,' the Round Oak Stove Company created a Native American mascot named 'Chief Doe-Wah-Jack' around 1900 that doubled as a phonetic pronunciation guide. In 1964 the city drew national attention while investigating reports of the 'Dewey Lake Monster,' a local Bigfoot-style creature. Dowagiac's DART dial-a-ride transit service, launched in June 1975, is among the oldest such systems in Michigan. The world's largest artificial-lure maker (Heddon) and a nationally sold cast-iron stove brand both came from a town of only a few thousand people.
