Draper is a fast-growing city straddling Salt Lake and Utah counties at the south end of the Salt Lake Valley, wrapped around the Point of the Mountain ridge. A quiet farming town famous in the 1940s as the 'Egg Basket of Utah,' it transformed after the 1990s into a tech and finance hub home to companies like 1-800 Contacts, HealthEquity, and Pluralsight. For 71 years it was best known as the site of the Utah State Prison, demolished after inmates moved out in 2022 to make way for a massive new development called The Point.

About Draper
Also known as. Egg Basket of Utah (1940s poultry heyday). Draperville (original settlement/post-office name). Sivogah (early Native American name meaning 'Willows').
History. The site was known by a Native American name, Sivogah ('Willows'); Ebenezer Brown brought cattle in 1849 and, with his wife Phebe Draper Palmer Brown, established formal settlement in 1850. A post office opened in 1854 as 'Draperville,' later shortened to Draper, named for the Draper family. A fort was begun in 1854-1856 during tensions with Native Americans but was never completed. In the 1940s Draper's poultry co-op made it the 'Egg Basket of Utah,' shipping eggs coast to coast and supplying U.S. troops in the South Pacific during WWII. Draper incorporated as a city in 1978 and grew explosively, from 7,257 residents in 1990 to 51,017 in 2020. The Utah State Prison operated in Draper from 1951 until inmates were relocated to the new Utah State Correctional Facility in July 2022.
Local economy. A regional tech and finance hub: headquarters of 1-800 Contacts, HealthEquity, Pluralsight, and Control4, plus a large eBay campus. Financial-sector operations include Goldman Sachs' Rocky Mountain regional presence and Synchrony Bank. Utah's first IKEA opened in Draper in 2007. The Point, a redevelopment of roughly 600 acres of state land on the former prison site, is planned to add homes, higher education, shopping, and entertainment. Historic economy rooted in farming and the mid-century poultry/egg industry.
Culture and community. Draper Days is the city's signature July celebration with a parade, rodeos, live music, fireworks, movie nights, and vendor booths. Concerts in the Park bring free Wednesday-evening performances to Draper Historic Park in June. The Draper Historic Theatre, a nonprofit community venue, occupies a building dating to 1938. The Draper Amphitheater on South Mountain seats over 2,000 for outdoor performances. Outdoor recreation culture centered on Corner Canyon's extensive trail network for hiking and mountain biking.
What makes Draper distinct. In the 1940s Draper eggs were shipped coast to coast and fed U.S. troops in the South Pacific, earning it the title 'Egg Basket of Utah.' For 71 years the town was synonymous with the Utah State Prison; its demolition after 2022 opened one of the largest infill development sites in the state. Point of the Mountain's reliable updrafts make it a nationally recognized spot for hang gliding and paragliding. The city's population grew roughly sevenfold between 1990 and 2020.
