Web Design for Duluth, Minnesota

Duluth climbs in steep terraces above the western tip of Lake Superior, the largest freshwater lake on Earth by surface area, where the St. Louis River spreads into a natural harbor. It is the farthest-inland seaport in North America, reached by ocean ships 2,342 miles from the Atlantic via the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Seaway, and it is the birthplace of Bob Dylan.

AppWT works with Duluth, MN businesses from Livonia, Michigan, mostly online and travelling as needed.

About Duluth

Also known as. Zenith City of the Unsalted Seas (coined in an 1868 Fourth of July speech by journalist Thomas Preston Foster). The Twin Ports (with neighboring Superior, Wisconsin). The Air-Conditioned City. City on a Hill.

History. Anishinaabe (Ojibwe) and Dakota peoples were the first known inhabitants; the city is named for Daniel Greysolon, Sieur du Lhut, the first known European explorer of the western Lake Superior area in the late 1600s. When the Lake Superior & Mississippi Railroad arrived in 1869, Duluth boomed from 14 families on New Year's Day to about 3,500 people by July, briefly making it the fastest-growing city in the United States. On June 15, 1920, three Black circus workers, Elias Clayton, Elmer Jackson, and Isaac McGhie, were lynched by a mob after a false accusation; a downtown memorial was dedicated in 2003. The U.S. steel crisis hit hard in the 1970s and 1980s; the Duluth Works plant closed in 1981 and unemployment peaked near 15%. In June 2012, a record flood struck after roughly 9 to 10 inches of rain fell in about a day.

Local economy. The Port of Duluth-Superior is the largest and busiest port on the Great Lakes, moving on the order of 35 million short tons a year of iron ore/taconite, coal, grain, and increasingly wind-turbine components. A regional hub for healthcare (two large hospital systems supporting 8,000-plus jobs), higher education (University of Minnesota Duluth), finance, and government. Home of Duluth Trading Company (workwear, founded 1989) and women's clothing retailer Maurices, plus a growing craft-beer scene led by breweries such as Bent Paddle. Tourism is now central to the economy; old lakefront warehouses were converted into the Canal Park district of shops, restaurants, and hotels.

Culture and community. Birthplace of Bob Dylan, born Robert Zimmerman on May 24, 1941, at St. Mary's Hospital; the city honors him with 'Bob Dylan Way,' a 1.8-mile downtown route designated in 2006, and the annual Duluth Dylan Fest. Grandma's Marathon, run each June along the Lake Superior shore, is one of the largest marathons in the country. Bentleyville 'Tour of Lights' at Bayfront Festival Park is one of the largest free walk-through holiday light displays in the U.S. Strong Nordic and Finnish heritage; in the early 1900s Duluth held one of the largest Finnish communities outside Finland and published a Finnish-language daily newspaper.

What makes Duluth distinct. Duluth is the most inland seaport in North America; ocean-going 'salties' from around the world dock 2,342 miles from the open Atlantic. The 'Air-Conditioned City' nickname is earned, as Lake Superior keeps summers cool while winters are famously frigid. Bob Dylan lived in Duluth only until age six, when his family moved to Hibbing on the Iron Range. The 'Zenith City' nickname dates to an 1868 Independence Day speech predicting Duluth would grow into a great metropolis.
