History. Settlement began around 1847, the same year nearby Lansing became Michigan's state capital. Michigan Agricultural College, now Michigan State University, was founded on the site in 1855 as a pioneer land-grant school. First known as Collegeville, the community was nearly incorporated as "College Park" before the legislature named it East Lansing at its 1907 incorporation. The 1907 city charter made East Lansing a dry city, banning the possession, sale, and consumption of alcohol, which lasted until 1968. Ingham County, which contains most of the city, was established in 1829 and named for Samuel D. Ingham, President Andrew Jackson's Secretary of the Treasury.
Local economy. The city is economically and demographically dominated by Michigan State University, one of the largest public universities in the United States and its top employer. MSU Federal Credit Union, based in the area, is the largest university-based credit union in the world. The Grand River Avenue corridor supports a college-town economy of restaurants, shops, and student housing.
Culture and community. The East Lansing Art Festival is a juried spring art show, held before Memorial Day, ranked among the nation's top art fairs. The Great Lakes Folk Festival is typically held the second weekend of August, and the East Lansing Film Festival is described as the largest of its kind in Michigan. Spartan football fills Spartan Stadium and basketball fills the Breslin Center, which also hosts the Michigan High School Boys State Basketball Championship. After MSU lost to Duke in the 1999 NCAA Final Four, the Cedar Fest riot drew 5,000 to 10,000 people, who overturned and burned cars; police made 132 arrests and damages ran up to roughly $500,000. A campus-area parking structure nicknamed the "Habitrail" was designed to look festive and ended up resembling a hamster cage.
