Eden Prairie is an affluent southwestern suburb of Minneapolis in Hennepin County, named by a 19th-century writer who was struck by the beauty of its rolling prairie along the Minnesota River. Once a sleepy farming village, it became a corporate and residential magnet after Flying Cloud Airport and Interstate 494 arrived, and Money magazine repeatedly ranked it among the best places to live in America. It is home to about 64,000 people and more than 2,800 businesses, from Fortune 500 headquarters to 170-plus miles of trails.

About Eden Prairie
Also known as. EP.
History. The land was part of Dakota (Sioux) territory; an 1851 treaty opened the area west of the Mississippi to settlement. Writer Elizabeth Fries Ellet named the area 'Eden' around 1853 out of admiration for the beautiful prairie, giving the future city its name. The town board held its first meeting in a log schoolhouse on May 11, 1858, the same day Minnesota became a state. Eden Prairie was incorporated as a village on October 22, 1962, and became a statutory city in 1974. Flying Cloud Airport (opened 1946) and later Interstate 494 transformed the farm village into a fast-growing suburb of homes and businesses.
Local economy. Home to more than 2,800 businesses spanning logistics, health care, retail/wholesale trade, industrial equipment, and information technology. A corporate headquarters hub: C.H. Robinson Worldwide (Fortune 500 logistics), Starkey Hearing Technologies, United Natural Foods (UNFI), and MTS Systems are all based here; SuperValu was formerly headquartered here too. Top employers include Optum (~6,500), C.H. Robinson (~2,500), Starkey Labs (~2,100), UNFI (~1,600), Lifetouch, MTS Systems, and Abbott Laboratories. The Eden Prairie Center regional shopping mall anchors local retail.
Culture and community. The Eden Prairie Center mall served as a filming location for Kevin Smith's 'Mallrats' (1995) and 'Drop Dead Gorgeous' (1999). The cult TV series 'Mystery Science Theater 3000' was produced in an Eden Prairie industrial park. Prince kept a rehearsal warehouse on Flying Cloud Drive, and his 1990 album and film 'Graffiti Bridge' referenced a local overpass on Valley View Road. The city offers 170-plus miles of multi-use trails, 2,250 acres of parks, and 1,300 acres of open space for outdoor recreation. Notable residents include Roblox co-founder and CEO David Baszucki, drummer Michael Bland, NFL running back Chuck Foreman, and MLB outfielder Dan Gladden.
What makes Eden Prairie distinct. The name 'Eden' came from a writer's admiration of the prairie, not from any settler family. The town's first governing meeting fell on May 11, 1858, the very day Minnesota entered the Union. Money magazine ranked Eden Prairie the No. 1 'Best Place to Live' in America in 2010 and No. 2 in 2016. Prince named 'Graffiti Bridge' after a real local overpass that was later demolished in 1991. It is the 16th-largest city in Minnesota with 64,198 residents at the 2020 census.
