History. The first settler, Granville Beardslee, arrived in the fall of 1834 from Rochester, New York, with his wife and two daughters and settled the township's northeast corner. The township was first organized under the name 'Androver' and given its present name in 1839. It is named for Robert Emmet, the Irish patriot executed after leading a 1803 revolt against British rule in Ireland. The former village of Verona, an early rival to Battle Creek, once lay within the township before being annexed by the growing city. Emmett became a charter township in September 1984, having previously been a general-law township. The population was 11,744 at the 2020 census.
Local economy. A regional manufacturing hub: much of the Fort Custer Industrial Park -- more than 80 companies employing nearly 13,000 people -- sits in and adjacent to the township. Denso, a Japanese-owned auto-parts maker with more than 2,500 local workers, is a park tenant and Calhoun County's single largest employer. FireKeepers Casino Hotel is a major employer and tourism draw. The Battle Creek Executive Airport at Kellogg Field lies adjacent to the industrial park.
