Web Design for Eugene, Oregon
Eugene is Oregon's lush, left-leaning second city, wrapped in green buttes and river paths at the south end of the Willamette Valley. Home to the University of Oregon, it is 'Track Town USA,' the spiritual birthplace of Nike and the ghost of Steve Prefontaine, where Hayward Field hosted the 2022 World Athletics Championships. Equal parts running mecca and hippie sanctuary, its counterculture roots run from Ken Kesey to the Saturday Market to the Oregon Country Fair.
AppWT works with Eugene, OR businesses from Livonia, Michigan, mostly online and travelling as needed.
About Eugene
Also known as. Track Town USA. The Emerald City. Emerald Valley. Silicon Shire (tech scene).
History. Founded in 1846 when Eugene Franklin Skinner built a cabin at the base of Skinner Butte (called Ya-po-ah by the Kalapuya people). Early settlers nicknamed the flood-prone site 'Skinner's Mudhole'; the town was replatted and renamed Eugene City in 1853. Incorporated as a city in 1862; the name was shortened from Eugene City to simply 'Eugene' in 1889. The University of Oregon was authorized in 1872 and opened in 1876, with its first building, Deady Hall, completed in 1877. The Oregon and California Railroad reached Eugene in 1871, expanding it from a timber town into an agricultural shipping hub.
Local economy. Historically a timber and wood-products town; lumber mills and forests drove the early economy. Top employers today include PeaceHealth (medical) and the University of Oregon (each around 5,500 employees), plus Eugene School District 4J. Nicknamed the 'Silicon Shire' for a growing cluster of software and tech startups. Birthplace or launch point of companies including Nike (via UO track figures), Taco Time, Burley Design bicycle trailers, and Bike Friday folding bikes. Recreational-vehicle manufacturing and outdoor-recreation industries remain significant.
Culture and community. 'Track Town USA': the University of Oregon track program, Oregon Track Club and Nike are tightly linked; Nike co-founders Phil Knight (a UO runner) and coach Bill Bowerman built the brand here. Hayward Field is the sport's American cathedral and hosted the 2022 World Athletics Championships, the first held on U.S. soil. The Eugene Saturday Market, founded in 1970, is cited as the first weekly open-air 'Saturday Market' in the United States and still runs April through November. The Oregon Country Fair, a three-day art and music fair near Veneta since 1969, is a counterculture institution; the Grateful Dead played a 1982 benefit there arranged with Ken Kesey. Author and Merry Prankster Ken Kesey ('One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest') lived in the area; 'Classical Gas' composer Mason Williams is also a local figure. Parts of the University of Oregon campus (Johnson Hall, Gerlinger Hall) doubled for the 1978 comedy 'Animal House.'
What makes Eugene distinct. Eugene records some of the highest grass-pollen counts in the U.S. (over 1,500 grains per cubic meter) because the surrounding Willamette Valley is a global grass-seed capital. Distance-running icon Steve Prefontaine trained and raced here until his death in a 1975 car crash at age 24; his memory is central to the city's identity. The 'Emerald City' nickname comes from the intensely green, fern-covered surrounding forests. Its counterculture and activist streak is long-running, from 1970s freeway fights to Occupy Eugene in 2011.
