History. Elam Atwater Fenn, a lumberman from New York, arrived in 1851 and built a sawmill around 1860, giving the settlement its name. The town was destroyed by fire in 1871, in the same period as the Great Chicago and Great Michigan fires. The Chicago & Michigan Lake Shore Railroad established a station and the rebuilt farming village was named Fennville. Fennville was incorporated as a village on February 20, 1889. It became a city in 1961. The U.S. Treasury designated the Fennville American Viticultural Area in 1981, one of the earliest AVAs in the country.
Local economy. Historically an agricultural town built on fruit orchards, earning it the label "Fruit Basket of Allegan County." A center of peppermint and spearmint farming; A.M. Todd's "Campaignia" plantation near Fennville was once the largest mint plantation in the world, part of a region that supplied up to 90% of the world's mint. Wine and cider production anchored by the Fennville AVA, Michigan's oldest (and smallest) wine-growing appellation. A Conagra Brands food-processing facility operated for nearly a century before closing in June 2025, cutting about 85 jobs.
