History. Clark Dibble of New York was the first white settler, buying land in March 1834; the early settlement was called Dibbleville. In 1837 William M. The post office opened as Fentonville on June 26, 1837, and was renamed Fenton on February 2, 1866; the township was organized March 6, 1838. The Village of Fenton incorporated in 1863; the township became a charter township in 1980. The Detroit & Milwaukee Railroad reached Fenton in 1856, spurring growth, and the Fenton Hotel was built that year to house rail travelers.
