Web Design for Flagstaff, Arizona

Flagstaff is a high-elevation mountain city (around 7,000 feet) in northern Arizona, ringed by the San Francisco Peaks and vast ponderosa pine forest, and it serves as the gateway to the Grand Canyon and Route 66's most scenic stretch. Born as a railroad and lumber town, it grew into a college town and world-class astronomy center where Pluto was discovered in 1930. It is the seat of Coconino County, the second-largest county by area in the contiguous United States.

AppWT works with Flagstaff, AZ businesses from Livonia, Michigan, mostly online and travelling as needed.

About Flagstaff

Also known as. City of Seven Wonders. Dark Sky City (world's first International Dark-Sky City). Skylight City (historical 1890s nickname).

History. On July 4, 1876, Boston emigrants camped at a spring stripped a ponderosa pine of its branches to raise an American flag for the nation's centennial; the resulting 'flag staff' became a landmark and gave the town its name. The settlement grew after the railroad arrived, and by 1886 Flagstaff was the largest city on the rail line between Albuquerque and the West Coast; the early economy ran on timber, sheep, and cattle. Coconino County was created in 1891, and Flagstaff beat nearby Williams to become county seat; the county name derives from 'Cohonino,' a name applied to the Havasupai people. Flagstaff incorporated as a town in 1894 and later as a city, and Northern Arizona University traces its roots to a normal school founded in the 1890s. Lowell Observatory was established on Mars Hill in 1894 after A.E. Douglass recommended Flagstaff's clear, high-altitude skies to Percival Lowell.

Local economy. Northern Arizona University (NAU) is a major employer and anchors the city as a college town. Astronomy and science research is a core identity: Lowell Observatory, the U.S. Naval Observatory Flagstaff Station, and a U.S. Geological Survey campus (including its Astrogeology Science Center) are all here. W.L. Gore & Associates manufactures Gore-Tex in Flagstaff. Other manufacturers include Nestle Purina PetCare and Joy Cone (ice cream cones). Tourism is huge, drawing over 5 million visitors a year thanks to proximity to Grand Canyon National Park (about 80 miles northwest) and Route 66. Historic lumber and ranching roots have given way to education, research, healthcare, and outdoor tourism.

Culture and community. The Pine Cone Drop on New Year's Eve lowers a roughly 70-pound illuminated metal pine cone from the historic Weatherford Hotel at midnight, a tradition since 1999. Route 66 heritage is central; annual celebrations honor the historic highway that runs through downtown. The Museum of Northern Arizona showcases Colorado Plateau archaeology, biology, and Native art. The Arboretum at Flagstaff is a 200-acre site with thousands of high-elevation and drought-tolerant plant species and hosts a Penstemon Festival. Historic downtown centers on Heritage Square, with the 1911 Orpheum Theater and a strong local craft-brewery scene. Winter recreation and mountain culture thrive thanks to Arizona Snowbowl and heavy snowfall.

What makes Flagstaff distinct. Pluto was discovered from Flagstaff's Lowell Observatory by Clyde Tombaugh in 1930. Apollo astronauts trained around Flagstaff, and USGS scientists here helped map the Moon and pick landing sites. Flagstaff passed an ordinance restricting large searchlights in 1958 to protect its night skies, decades before becoming the world's first International Dark-Sky City on October 24, 2001. It ranks among the snowiest cities in the U.S. and set a single-day snowfall record of about 35.9 inches on February 21, 2019, yet still averages roughly 78% annual sunshine. At about 6,900-7,000 feet elevation, its summers stay dramatically cooler than the Arizona lowlands. Coconino County is the second-largest county by area in the lower 48 states.
