About Flushing Charter Township
History. The Flushing area grew up as a mill town in the mid-1830s, its Flint River location decisive to settlement. The township was settled in 1835 by Rufus Harrison, organized in 1838, and became a charter township in 1990. The name was almost 'Dover' (proposed by Ebenezer French), but the legislature chose 'Flushing' because a Dover Township already existed in Michigan. Charles Seymour Sr. purchased land in 1835 and partnered with Horace Jerome, who held water rights; their mill began operating in the summer of 1837. Early settler Thomas L. L. Brent bought roughly 70,000 acres and founded the nearby Brent Creek community; the Village of Flushing was platted in 1840 and incorporated as a village in 1877. On December 22, 1951, a B-29 Superfortress crashed on a local farm during a training flight; pilot 1st Lt. Robert Davis Phelps steered the crippled aircraft away from residential areas before the crash.
Local economy. Largely a residential bedroom community serving Flint and the greater Genesee County area. Connected to the Karegnondi Water Authority pipeline in 2017 for its municipal water supply. Local commerce is concentrated in the adjoining City of Flushing's downtown business district.
Culture and community. The annual Flushing Candlewalk, more than 30 years old, is one of Genesee County's largest events, drawing crowds downtown for hot chocolate, s'mores and roasted chestnuts.
