Gale; at an 1837 meeting at Nathaniel Cothren's house, William Harris proposed "Harrisburg" and Gale proposed "Galesburg," and a vote settled it in Gale's favor. Incorporated as a village in 1861 and as a city in 1931. Located on the north side of the Kalamazoo River, about 10 miles east of Kalamazoo and 10 miles west of Battle Creek. Galesburg-Augusta Community Schools was formed in 1951 by combining the Galesburg and neighboring Augusta districts. In the July 2010 Enbridge Line 6B (Kalamazoo River) oil spill, roughly 843,000 gallons of diluted bitumen flowed down Talmadge Creek and the Kalamazoo River about 35-38 miles past Galesburg; Morrow Lake near Galesburg was a key containment and dredging site during the five-year cleanup.
