History. Organized in 1853 as Traverse Township, originally covering most of Grand Traverse County -- including the land that would become Traverse City. Renamed in 1882 in honor of assassinated U.S. President James A. Garfield. Traverse City was later carved out of the township as its own incorporated city. Became a charter township in 1977. Population grew dramatically from 986 residents in 1900 to 19,499 in the 2020 census.
Local economy. Heavily commercialized suburban township; the US-31 / South Airport Road corridor is the retail hub of the Traverse City area. The Grand Traverse Mall opened in 1992 with anchors including JCPenney, Target, Dunham's Sports, and Ollie's Bargain Outlet. Munson Medical Center (opened 1925) is among the region's largest employers, with facilities in the area. Cherry Capital Airport (opened 1936) sits immediately adjacent within Traverse City and is a major regional employer. Logan's Landing, a 1960s retail-and-restaurant development, straddles the Boardman River on opposing banks connected by a bridge.
Culture and community. The Village at Grand Traverse Commons -- the redeveloped former Traverse City State Hospital (Northern Michigan Asylum for the Insane) -- straddles the Garfield Township / Traverse City boundary and reopened in 2002 as one of the largest historic-renovation projects in the country, now filled with shops, a winery, a brewery, eateries, and lofts. Historic Barns Park is park land jointly held by Garfield Township and Traverse City on the former hospital grounds. Miles of wooded trails wind through the former asylum grounds and township park land.
