Web Design for Gatineau, Quebec

Gatineau is Quebec's fourth-largest city, sitting on the north bank of the Ottawa River directly across from Ottawa, Ontario, and it is the largest city in the Outaouais region. The modern city was created in 2002 by amalgamating Hull, Aylmer, the former Gatineau, Buckingham and Masson-Angers, and it functions as the Quebec half of Canada's National Capital Region. It is the most bilingual city in the country and home to the Canadian Museum of History.

AppWT works with Gatineau, QC businesses from Livonia, Michigan, mostly online and travelling as needed.

About Gatineau

Also known as. The most bilingual city in Canada (unofficial descriptor, ~63.5% French-English bilingual). Part of the National Capital Region / Ottawa-Gatineau.

History. Hull, on the north shore of the Ottawa River, was founded in 1800 by Philemon Wright, who came from Woburn, Massachusetts with his family and roughly 25-33 laborers to build an agricultural settlement first called Wright's Town. In 1806 Wright launched the Ottawa Valley timber trade, floating the first square-timber raft down the Ottawa River to Quebec City. The city takes its name from the Gatineau River, itself named for Nicolas Gatineau, a 17th-century fur trader who reportedly drowned in the river around 1683; Indigenous (Anishinaabe) names for the river include Tenagadino Zibi. Gatineau was incorporated as a village in 1933, became a town in 1946, and a city in 1975. In 2002 the province amalgamated Aylmer, Hull, the old Gatineau, Buckingham and Masson-Angers into the single new City of Gatineau.

Local economy. The federal public service is the dominant employer; large federal complexes such as Place du Portage and Terrasses de la Chaudiere house thousands of civil servants. Federal departments and agencies based here include Canadian Heritage, Environment Canada, Public Services and Procurement Canada (Public Works), Employment and Social Development Canada, and Crown-Indigenous/Indigenous affairs departments. The economy began as a timber and forest-products center in the 19th century before shifting to government, services, construction, health care and education. Gatineau shares the Ottawa-Gatineau technology cluster, a region with roughly 1,900 tech companies employing close to 80,000 workers, and it draws around one million tourists a year.

Culture and community. Les Grands Feux du Casino Lac-Leamy is an international pyromusical fireworks competition held each summer on the grounds of the Canadian Museum of History, with Parliament Hill across the river as a backdrop. The Gatineau Hot Air Balloon Festival (Festival de montgolfieres) takes place over the Labour Day weekend. Winter activities of Ottawa's Winterlude spill into Gatineau, notably at Jacques-Cartier Park. Sports teams include the Gatineau Olympiques (QMJHL major-junior hockey), the Gatineau Vikings (Canadian football) and the Gatineau Fusion (National Ringette League).

What makes Gatineau distinct. Gatineau is the most bilingual city in Canada, with roughly 63.5% of residents fluent in both French and English. The landmark Canadian Museum of History was designed by Douglas Cardinal, an architect of Blackfoot (Indigenous) heritage, and its flowing curved forms famously avoid straight lines. Although it is a Quebec city, its daily life is tightly integrated with Ottawa, Ontario, forming one census metropolitan area across a provincial boundary. As of the 2021 census the city had a population of 291,041.
