Web Design for Gaylord, Michigan

Gaylord is the county seat and only city in Otsego County, a northern-Michigan resort town that reinvented itself in the 1960s as a Swiss-style 'Alpine Village,' dressing its Main Street storefronts in Tyrolean chalet facades. Sitting on the 45th parallel roughly 1,350 feet up in the snowbelt, it draws visitors for skiing, golf, snowmobiling and its trademark summer festival, Alpenfest. The city even keeps its own free-roaming elk herd on public viewing grounds.

AppWT serves Gaylord and the surrounding Michigan area from Livonia, Michigan.

About Gaylord

Also known as. The Alpine Village. Alpine Village.

History. Settled around 1873 when railroads pushed north from Otsego Lake Village; first called 'Barnes' after Michigan Central Railroad secretary Orlando Barnes. Renamed 'Village of Gaylord' in 1874 in honor of Augustine Smith Gaylord, an attorney tied to the Jackson, Lansing & Saginaw Railroad. Became county seat of Otsego County in 1877; incorporated as a village in 1881 and as a city in 1922 (by a 114-93 vote). The Gaylord Motor Car Company built roughly 350 automobiles between 1910 and 1913 before going bankrupt. The 'Alpine Village' concept, first floated with 1930s chalet architecture, was revived in 1963 as a plan to remake the whole downtown in Swiss style. On May 20, 2022, an EF3 tornado with 150 mph winds struck the city, the first tornado on record there since 1950, killing 2 and injuring 44.

Local economy. Balanced base of tourism, recreation, agriculture, oil and natural gas, manufacturing, warehouse distribution, retail and government services. One of the largest concentrations of ski and golf resorts in the Midwest, fueled by roughly 140 inches of average annual snowfall. Historic industry included the Dayton Last Block Works (1895-1931), which turned local hardwoods into shoe forms, bowling pins and golf-club heads.

Culture and community. Alpenfest, held the third week of July since 1965, is a Swiss-themed celebration featuring a yodeling contest, Swiss stone spitting, ankle and knee contests, and lampion (lantern) making. The festival's 'Die Groeste Kaffeepause' (World's Largest Coffee Break) serves free coffee, donuts and milk under the pavilion with the Gaylord Alpine Band; in 1983 organizers sought a Guinness record but were told no category existed. Downtown carries a Bavarian/Alpine aesthetic, and the Otsego County area leans into outdoor recreation culture year-round. High school softball won back-to-back MHSAA Division 2 state titles in 2023 and 2024, setting a state single-season home run record (72) in 2023.

What makes Gaylord distinct. Gaylord sits directly on the 45th parallel, the halfway point between the equator and the North Pole. Its sister city is Pontresina, Switzerland, cementing the Alpine theme. Claude Shannon (1916-2001), the 'father of information theory,' grew up in Gaylord. Cardinal Edmund Szoka, first bishop of the Diocese of Gaylord, later ran Vatican City's finances. The city deliberately maintains a mountain-resort Alpine identity despite sitting in the relatively flat northern Lower Peninsula.
