About Germantown

Also known as. Pea Ridge (original 1830s settlement name). Neshoba (Chickasaw word for 'wolf'; the town's official name from 1917 to 1922). City motto: 'Excellence. Every Day.'.

History. Settlers arrived in the 1820s-1830s in an area first called Pea Ridge; the surveyor N. T. German laid out town lots in 1834 and the community was renamed Germantown in 1836 to reflect its German families, then officially chartered in 1841. Between 1825 and 1830, Frances Wright established the nearby Nashoba (Neshoba) Plantation, a utopian colony intended to educate enslaved people to become self-supporting and prepare them for emancipation. The Memphis & Charleston Railroad reached the town in 1852, and by 1849 the Germantown post office was the second-busiest in Shelby County. During the Civil War, roughly 250 Union soldiers built Fort Germantown to guard the Memphis-Charleston rail line; the earthwork site is on the National Register of Historic Places. Amid anti-German sentiment in World War I, the town's name was officially changed to Neshoba from 1917 to 1922; a group of 326 residents petitioned for the change, and some proposed renaming it 'Woodrow' after President Wilson.

Local economy. An affluent residential/bedroom community: median household income was about $149,920 in 2024, 71.9% of adults hold a bachelor's degree or higher, and only about 2.7% live below the poverty line. Methodist Le Bonheur Germantown Hospital is a major local employer and healthcare anchor. ThyssenKrupp (elevator operations) has had a significant corporate presence in the city. The Germantown Municipal School District (GMSD) is both a large employer and one of Tennessee's highest-performing school systems, a key draw for residents.

Culture and community. The Germantown Charity Horse Show, held each June, is a longstanding equestrian tradition and one of the region's premier charity horse shows, reflecting the city's horse-country heritage. The Germantown Festival, an arts-and-crafts fair, draws large crowds in early September. The city cultivates a genteel, equestrian-flavored suburban identity, with municipal parks and preserved historic structures.

What makes Germantown distinct. The town was legally renamed 'Neshoba' (Chickasaw for 'wolf') during World War I because of anti-German feeling; some soldiers from Germantown reportedly asked family to leave the town's name off letters to avoid ribbing from fellow troops. Germantown is one of only five U.S. municipalities ever to win the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award (2019). It has been designated a Tree City USA for more than 30 consecutive years. The area's Nashoba utopian community predated the town itself, founded by Scottish reformer Frances Wright in the 1820s.

Affluent eastern suburb of Memphis in Shelby County known for tree-lined neighborhoods, strong schools, extensive parks and greenways, and a low crime rate.
