Originally part of Brownstown Township, Gibraltar incorporated as a village in 1954, with Hy Dahlka as first village president, and became a city in 1961 under first mayor Charles Shumate. The War of 1812 Battle of Brownstown was fought on ground where Carlson High School now stands. As of the 2020 census the city had 4,997 residents.
Local economy. Early Gibraltar, then known as Fish Creek, was an active fishing and logging village. Shipbuilding was a major early industry, with Scottish shipwrights, French woodsmen, and Irish laborers building schooners; shipbuilder R. Linn, born in Scotland, arrived in 1841. By the early 20th century the village became a summer vacation destination with bath houses, group hikes, and sailing regattas. Today marinas, boat yards, and waterfront real estate define the local economy, serving boaters and anglers along the canals and Detroit River.
