History. European-descended settlement began in 1859 when the Hamilton Corporation used the site as a shipping port for iron ore. The town was platted in 1887 under the name Minnewasca, an Ojibwe word meaning 'white water.' Senator W. D. Washburn, who had an interest in the railroad partially funded by British capital, persuaded officials to rename the town after British Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone in appreciation for the resulting development. Gladstone was incorporated as a village in 1887 and as a city in 1889. The city grew as a hub of the Upper Peninsula's resource economy, shipping iron ore, lumber, coal, and copper, and becoming a rail hub after the 1870s. After struggles tied to the decline of resource and industrial economies, Gladstone diversified, recovered population in the 1990s, weathered the 2008 crisis, and grew again by the 2020 census.
