History. The first settlers in the area were Marvel Secord and his family, who in 1861 canoed up the Tittabawassee River to the mouth of the Sugar River, a few miles from the present city. The town began in 1875 during the Michigan lumber boom and was originally platted as "Cedar" for its location on the Cedar River; when it received a post office in September 1875 it took the name of the county. Gladwin County was named in 1831 for British Major Henry Gladwin, the Fort Detroit commander whose garrison withstood Chief Pontiac's roughly five-month siege in 1763; the county government was organized in 1875. The first Methodist church was completed March 31, 1878, and the first schoolhouse was built in the fall of 1878 by Isaac Hanna, replaced by a four-room school in 1883. Gladwin became an official village in 1885 and incorporated as a city in 1893.

Local economy. The early economy was built on the lumber trade during the 1870s and 1880s. Gladwin County became a national hub for plastics and thermoforming; neighboring Beaverton (also in Gladwin County) is titled the "Thermoforming Capital of the World." Brown Machine Group, founded in Beaverton in 1952, builds thermoforming and packaging systems in a roughly 135,000-square-foot plant on the Tobacco River with more than 200 employees and systems running in over 65 countries. As the county seat, Gladwin serves as the government and services center for the surrounding rural county, sitting at the junction of highways M-18 and M-61. Agriculture and outdoor tourism (lakes, rivers, and recreation) round out the local economy.

Culture and community. The Gladwin County Carriage Festival, run by the county historical society, centers on a restored historic carriage house at the fairgrounds. The Gladwin County Fair is a long-running summer event at the county fairgrounds. Downtown hosts a Festival of Lights on the first Saturday of December and a summer StreetFest. Rapper NF (Nathan "Nate" Feuerstein) grew up in Gladwin and graduated from Gladwin High School in 2009, where he played basketball. The Christian rock band 2nd Mile also has roots in Gladwin.
