Web Design for Glenview, Illinois

Glenview is an affluent village in northeastern Cook County about 20 miles north of downtown Chicago, blending old farm heritage with corporate headquarters and a large modern redevelopment. For most of the 20th century it was defined by Naval Air Station Glenview, the Navy's largest WWII primary flight-training base; after its 1995 closure the 1,100-acre site became The Glen, a mixed-use district of homes, shops, and offices. It remains home to one of the last working dairy farms in Cook County.

AppWT works with Glenview, IL businesses from Livonia, Michigan, mostly online and travelling as needed.

About Glenview

Also known as. Glen View (the 1895 name chosen for the village, later merged to one word). The Glen (the redeveloped former naval air station district). Formerly Oak Glen / Glen Oak, South Northfield, Barr, Rugenville, and Hutchings (early names).

History. Settlement began in 1833; before settling on its name the community was called South Northfield, North Branch, Oak Glen/Glen Oak, Barr, Rugenville, and Hutchings. In 1895 residents met in a room above Al Eustic's saloon and voted to name the town 'Glen View'; the 1899 incorporation papers rendered it as one word, Glenview, official June 20, 1899. The Kennicott family were among the first settlers of Northfield Township in March 1836; John Wagner homesteaded a farm in 1837 that endures as a working dairy. Curtiss Flying Service bought 345 acres in the 1920s and built Curtiss-Reynolds Airfield in 1929, dedicated just nine days before the 1929 stock market crash. The field became Naval Air Station Glenview, an operational U.S. Navy air station from 1937 to 1995; during WWII it was the Navy's largest primary flight-training facility. Nearly 9,000 aviation cadets trained there and about 17,000 pilots earned carrier-landing qualification, using paddlewheel training carriers on Lake Michigan.

Local economy. The 1995 base closure led to The Glen, a village-led redevelopment (backed by tax increment financing that ended in 2021) with over a million square feet each of commercial and office space plus thousands of homes and jobs. Headquarters of Illinois Tool Works (ITW), a Fortune 500 manufacturer of engineered fasteners, equipment, and specialty products. Headquarters of Anixter International (founded 1957), a global distributor for communications, security, networking, and industrial applications. An affluent commuter suburb with a median family income near $138,758, served by Metra rail and major expressways for access to Chicago.

Culture and community. Historic Wagner Farm, a working 1920s-era dairy farm and heritage center, offers hands-on rural history in the middle of suburbia. The Kohl Children's Museum of Greater Chicago, a hands-on museum for children birth to age 8, relocated to The Glen in 2005; it was founded in 1985 by philanthropist Dolores Kohl of the Kohl's department store family. The Grove National Historic Landmark preserves the Kennicott House and grounds of pioneering 19th-century naturalists. Strong North Shore suburban culture with parks, golf clubs (including the historic Glen View Club), and family attractions.

What makes Glenview distinct. The town cycled through at least six names before residents settled on 'Glen View' in an 1895 vote held above a saloon. During WWII the Navy trained carrier pilots not on the ocean but on converted paddlewheel aircraft carriers on Lake Michigan out of landlocked Glenview. Curtiss-Reynolds Airfield was dedicated just nine days before the 1929 stock-market crash, dooming its early promise. A dense Chicago suburb still contains a fully operational dairy farm (Wagner Farm) open to the public.

An affluent suburban village about 15 miles northwest of downtown Chicago, known for strong schools, extensive parks, and the large mixed-use development on the former Naval Air Station site.
