Grand Haven is a Lake Michigan beach town at the mouth of the Grand River in Ottawa County, federally designated 'Coast Guard City, USA' by an Act of Congress in 1998. Hundreds of thousands of visitors come each summer for its two-week Coast Guard Festival and the nightly Grand Haven Musical Fountain, once the largest musical fountain of its kind in the world. Together with neighboring Spring Lake and Ferrysburg it forms the 'Tri-Cities.'

AppWT serves Grand Haven and the surrounding Michigan area from Livonia, Michigan.

About Grand Haven

Also known as. Coast Guard City, USA. Part of the Tri-Cities (with Spring Lake and Ferrysburg).

History. The area was first worked by French fur traders and settled by Americans after the War of 1812. Presbyterian minister William Montague Ferry established the first church in 1834, and Rix Robinson named the town 'Grand Haven' in 1835. Grand Haven was incorporated in 1867 and grew in the 19th century as a logging, lumber, and shipbuilding center. The Coast Guard Festival traces its roots to 1924, when it began as a Coast Guard personnel picnic with rowing competitions among service members stationed in Grand Haven. Congress and President Bill Clinton officially designated Grand Haven 'Coast Guard City, USA' on November 13, 1998.

Local economy. Tourism and beach resort activity anchor the economy, supported by more than 100 miles of area bike trails. Grand Haven is a working Great Lakes port, importing limestone, slag, cement, and coal and exporting sand. The Story and Clark Piano Company manufactured pianos in the city from 1900 to 1984 and was one of Grand Haven's largest employers; its downtown factory is now the HarbourFront Condominiums. The city had 11,011 residents at the 2020 census, with a notably older population (median age 47.7, and about a quarter aged 65 or older). Historic industries also included leather tanning and shipbuilding.

Culture and community. The Coast Guard Festival, held annually from late July into early August, draws crowds in the hundreds of thousands over roughly two weeks of parades, ship tours, and fireworks. The Grand Haven Musical Fountain, built by volunteers in 1962 on Dewey Hill, runs synchronized water-and-light shows nightly in summer; its first show was May 30, 1963. The Great Lakes Kite Festival, started in 1986 by the MACkite shop, fills Grand Haven State Park with giant show kites on the weekend before Memorial Day. A vintage-style Lakeshore/Harbor Trolley shuttles visitors between downtown, the beach, and area attractions in summer. The Tri-Cities Historical Museum interprets the shared history of Grand Haven, Spring Lake, and Ferrysburg through thirteen permanent exhibits. Waterfront dining, a downtown stadium with live music, and the boardwalk to the pier define summer nightlife.

What makes Grand Haven distinct. Grand Haven is the only community in the nation named 'Coast Guard City, USA' by an Act of Congress. The Musical Fountain was the world's largest musical fountain of its kind until the Fountains of Bellagio opened in Las Vegas in 1998. In 2004 Grand Haven became the first U.S. municipality to offer citywide wireless internet, with coverage reportedly extending about 15 miles offshore onto Lake Michigan. Depression-era outlaws George 'Baby Face' Nelson and Homer Van Meter pulled their very first bank robbery in Grand Haven in 1933.
