Greenfield is a leafy Milwaukee suburb that earned the historical-marker nickname 'The Last Town in Milwaukee County' by being the final municipality there to incorporate, in 1957, after its neighbors had annexed it down to a third of its original size. Once farm country named for its rolling green fields, it is now a healthcare-and-manufacturing bedroom community best known outside Wisconsin as the high-school home of NBA guard Tyler Herro.

About Greenfield
Also known as. The Last Town in Milwaukee County (from a local historical marker, recalling that it was the final municipality in the county to incorporate).
History. Surveyed for settlement in 1836 and organized in 1839 as the 36-square-mile Town of Kinnickinnic (also spelled Kinnikennick), before being renamed Greenfield in 1841. Named both for its expansive green fields and after Greenfield, Massachusetts, home region of many of its New England settlers, with later waves of Irish and German immigrants. Lost large portions of its original territory as West Allis and West Milwaukee incorporated in 1906 and the City of Milwaukee annexed additional land. Incorporated as a city in 1957, the last municipality in Milwaukee County to do so, and the largest community to incorporate in the county at that time, by then reduced to roughly a third of its original size.
Local economy. A diversified suburban economy; as of 2024 the largest employment sectors were Health Care and Social Assistance (about 3,746 workers), Manufacturing (about 3,208), and Retail Trade (about 2,119). Health care is a major anchor, including the former Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare hospital campus. Retail and commercial corridors along Layton Avenue, Loomis Road, and 84th Street, including the 84South mixed-use development. Functions largely as a bedroom community within the Milwaukee metropolitan area, served by Interstates 41 and 43.
Culture and community. The weekly Greenfield Farmers Market showcasing local produce and crafts. A Summer Concert Series with live music in the city's parks. The annual Greenfield Community Festival with food, music, and family activities. Konkel Park, the city's marquee gathering space, which added two family Storybook Trails.
What makes Greenfield distinct. It is literally 'the last town in Milwaukee County,' the final municipality to incorporate (1957) after being whittled down to about a third of its original size by its neighbors. The city was originally named Kinnickinnic before adopting Greenfield in 1841. Miami Heat guard Tyler Herro graduated from Whitnall High School in Greenfield, averaging 32.9 points as a senior and scoring more than 2,000 career points before going 13th in the 2019 NBA draft. Its name is a transplant from Greenfield, Massachusetts, carried west by New England pioneers.
