History. Hampton Township was organized on April 29, 1857, along with Williams Township, when Bay County was formed from part of old Saginaw County. The area around present Essexville was a site where Nabobish, a Chippewa chief, and his people had settled; the community was later named for local settler Ransom P. Essex. Dutch settlers arrived beginning in 1855 and farmed the land after clearing timber and draining the marshy ground. In 1867 Carriere & Company built a sawmill employing about 30 workers, and land was platted as development accelerated. Essexville was platted in 1867, incorporated as a village within Hampton Township in 1883, and became an independent city in 1934. In 2016 Consumers Energy closed the local Weadock Generating Plant, and with Karn coal units set to close the township merged its police and fire departments in October 2018 to manage revenue losses.

Local economy. The area's early economy depended on wood, salt, coal, and agriculture during the late 1800s and early 1900s. Michigan Sugar Company built the first successful beet sugar plant in Michigan in Essexville in 1898 and has produced Pioneer Sugar since 1906; sugar beets remain a defining regional crop. Consumers Energy long operated major electricity-generating plants (Weadock and Karn) in the area before recent coal closures. The eastern township remains agricultural while the western portion is more densely developed and suburban.

Culture and community. Served by Essexville-Hampton Public Schools, whose high school is Garber High School. Community life is tied to neighboring Bay City and to the Saginaw Bay waterfront for boating, fishing, and recreation. The wider sugar-beet region is celebrated at the Michigan Sugar Festival, though that event is held in Sebewaing rather than in the township itself.

What makes Hampton Charter Township distinct. The township hosted Michigan's first successful beet sugar plant, built in Essexville in 1898. The point where the Saginaw River meets Lake Huron made the area a historic fur-trading location. Essexville was carved directly out of Hampton Township, so the small city is nearly surrounded by the township that spawned it. The township covers only about 27 square miles of land but claims about nine miles of Great Lakes bay shoreline.
