About Hart
Also known as. Popularly tied to being the "heart" of Oceana County from its central location. Anchor of Oceana County's self-proclaimed "Asparagus Capital" identity, as host of the National Asparagus Festival.
History. Founded in 1856 by early pioneers including Nelson Grove. Hart Township was named after Wellington Hart; the name is also popularly linked to the city's central "heart" position in Oceana County, and "hart" is itself the Old English word ("heorot") for an adult male deer. Selected as Oceana County seat by a majority vote in 1864; the first county courthouse was built in 1874, and county supervisors first met in it in August 1874. Oceana County was organized in 1855 and named after a poetic term for the ocean, reflecting its Lake Michigan shoreline.
Local economy. Agriculture and food processing dominate; Oceana County is the heart of Michigan asparagus production, and Michigan leads the nation in asparagus, giving rise to the "Asparagus Capital" identity. Peterson Farms, founded in 1984 by Earl and Linda Peterson to handle their tart-cherry crop, grew into the largest privately owned fruit processor in Michigan and a major area employer, processing asparagus, apples, cherries, blueberries and peaches. As county seat, Hart is the government and services hub for Oceana County.
Culture and community. National Asparagus Festival, held the second weekend in June, is the longest-running asparagus festival in the country (53rd edition in 2026). Festival traditions include an Asparagus Queen & Royal Pageant, the Joan Glover Royal Parade, a "Taste of Asparagus," the "Spear-It" 5K run, a car show, farm tours, and arts, crafts and quilt shows on the Oceana County Courthouse lawn. Served by the Hart Public School District.
What makes Hart distinct. The word "hart" is Old English ("heorot") for an adult male red deer. Grammy-winning instrumental/new-age pianist George Winston (b. 1949) was born in Hart. Harvard nutrition scientist Dr. Walter Willett is a Hart native. In the 2020 census roughly 29% of Hart's residents identified as Hispanic or Latino, reflecting the region's agricultural workforce.
