About Hartford
Also known as. Insurance Capital of the World. America's Filing Cabinet. New England's Rising Star (city slogan).
History. Dutch traders built Fort Hoop (House of Hope) here around 1623; English settlers led by Thomas Hooker arrived from Massachusetts and the town was named for Hertford, England, in 1637. A 1638 sermon by Hooker helped inspire the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut, an early written framework of self-government. Hartford alternated with New Haven as co-capital of Connecticut from 1664 and has been the sole capital since 1875. The Hartford Fire Insurance Company was chartered in 1810, formalizing the industry that would define the city. On July 6, 1944, the Hartford circus fire killed roughly 168 people, mostly women and children, in one of the worst fire disasters in U.S. history.
Local economy. Insurance remains the signature industry, with Aetna, Travelers, The Hartford, and Hartford Steam Boiler among the major names. Healthcare and social services now form a large share of the economy alongside insurance and financial services. Technology and consulting firms including Infosys, CGI, and HCL Technologies have opened hubs in the city. As the state capital, Hartford is also a center of government employment.
Culture and community. Mark Twain wrote Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer while living in Hartford and called it the most beautiful town he had seen. Abolitionist author Harriet Beecher Stowe, who wrote Uncle Tom's Cabin, lived next door to Twain in the Nook Farm neighborhood. The first American cookbook, Amelia Simmons's 'American Cookery,' was published in Hartford in 1796. The Double-A Hartford Yard Goats (a Colorado Rockies affiliate) play at Dunkin' Park, which opened in 2017. Theater thrives at the Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts, Hartford Stage, and TheaterWorks.
What makes Hartford distinct. The Hartford Courant, founded in 1764, is the oldest continuously published newspaper in the United States. The American School for the Deaf, the first permanent school for the deaf in the country, was founded in Hartford in 1817. Legend says colonists hid Connecticut's royal charter inside the Charter Oak in 1687 to keep it from an English governor; the tree's site is still marked. Hartford holds a trio of 'oldests': its museum, its public park, and its newspaper all claim to be the oldest of their kind in the nation.
