History. In 1836 three entrepreneurs named Dibble, Kingsbury, and Kendall bought 480 acres along the Thornapple River from Detroit banker Eurotas P. Hastings for about $3,000 and platted the town, naming it after him. The surrounding township was organized in 1837; Hastings was designated county seat of Barry County in 1843. Hastings incorporated as a village in 1855 and as a city on March 11, 1871. Stagecoach service linked Hastings to Grand Rapids and Battle Creek starting in 1848, and the first railroad train arrived in 1869. The Barry County Pioneer newspaper launched in 1851; the Republican Banner began in 1856 and continues today as the Hastings Banner. The Barry County Courthouse was constructed in 1893 and still serves its original purpose. Barry County (and thus its seat) was named for U.S. Postmaster General William T. Barry, chosen to curry favor with the Jackson administration during the Toledo Strip dispute over statehood.

Local economy. Hastings Manufacturing Company, founded in 1915, is a global maker of piston rings for automotive, truck, agricultural, industrial, marine, and high-performance engines. Flexfab Horizons International, a manufacturer of silicone hoses and components, operates in Hastings. Manufacturing anchors the local economy, with dozens of industrial firms in and around the city. As the Barry County seat, county government and the 1893 courthouse are central to the city's role and employment.
