Web Design for Hayward, California
Hayward is an East Bay city in Alameda County, roughly midway between Oakland and Fremont, and is one of the Bay Area's larger cities with about 150,000 residents. Founded around an 1850s hotel and named for pioneer William Hayward, it grew from apricot orchards, canneries, and salt ponds into a diverse manufacturing and college town branded 'Heart of the Bay.' The seismically active Hayward Fault runs directly beneath its downtown, having slowly torn apart its old City Hall.

About Hayward
Also known as. Heart of the Bay. The Apricot City (historic). Heart of the Garden of Eden (historic).
History. In 1843 the Mexican government granted soldier-surveyor Guillermo Castro nearly 27,000 acres, which he named Rancho San Lorenzo, centered near present-day Mission Boulevard. In 1851 William Hayward, a prospector, bought land in what is now downtown and established a hotel that became the town's namesake and social center. The town incorporated on March 11, 1876, as 'Haywards'; the trailing 's' was dropped a few years later. Hunt Brothers Cannery opened in 1895 and grew into one of the world's largest fruit-and-vegetable processors, employing thousands until it closed in 1981. The nearby Russell City community, a largely Black and Latino unincorporated town and West Coast blues hotbed, was razed and its roughly 1,400 residents displaced when Hayward annexed the land for an industrial park in 1964.
Local economy. Early prosperity came from agriculture (apricots, tomatoes, cherries, peaches), fruit canning led by Hunt Brothers, and vast Leslie Salt evaporation ponds along the bay shore. Modern Hayward is a manufacturing and industrial center, with firms such as Plastikon, Berkeley Farms dairy, ConXtech steel, Lonza Biologics, Impossible Foods, and Illumina among area employers. Retail and services cluster around Southland Mall, the city's largest shopping center. California State University, East Bay and Chabot College make higher education and public-sector jobs a significant part of the local economy. The city markets its central Bay Area location and freeway/BART access as a business advantage, reflecting the 'Heart of the Bay' brand.
Culture and community. The Hayward Japanese Gardens, dedicated in 1980 and designed by Kimio Kimura, is regarded as one of the oldest traditional-style Japanese gardens in California. The Russell City Blues Festival celebrated the blues heritage of the lost Russell City community, where artists such as Big Mama Thornton performed. Cal State East Bay and Chabot College anchor the city's arts, athletics, and student life. The Hayward Area Recreation and Park District (HARD) runs parks and the historic Hayward Plunge public swim center. Hayward's population is among the most ethnically diverse in the Bay Area, shaping a wide range of food and community traditions.
What makes Hayward distinct. The Hayward Fault runs directly under downtown, and slow 'creep' along it literally twisted apart the 1930 City Hall, which was abandoned by the 1980s and saved as a historic structure in 1996 rather than demolished. Once known as the 'Apricot City,' Hayward was so fertile in the early 20th century that boosters called the area the 'Heart of the Garden of Eden.' The vanished town of Russell City, west of Hayward, was a nationally significant West Coast blues venue before the government bulldozed it in 1964; the city council later formally apologized for the displacement. Cal State East Bay was originally known as California State College (later University), Hayward, before its 2005 renaming.
A diverse East Bay city in Alameda County, the sixth largest in the San Francisco Bay Area, with a walkable downtown and a strong industrial and commuter base.
