About Henderson
Also known as. A Place to Call Home. City of Opportunity.
History. Established in 1942 in the desert to house workers at a government-built magnesium plant operated by Basic Magnesium, Inc. Named for U.S. Senator Charles Belknap Henderson (1873-1954) of Nevada. At its wartime peak the plant produced about 25% of the nation's magnesium; after the war the town was nearly sold off before the State of Nevada intervened. Officially incorporated as a city in 1953; population reached 317,610 at the 2020 census.
Local economy. Nevada's chief industrial center, producing titanium and heavy chemicals for commercial and defense uses. Major employers include the City of Henderson, St. Rose Dominican Hospital, and Green Valley Ranch Resort. Home to the Henderson Silver Knights, the American Hockey League affiliate of the NHL's Vegas Golden Knights, who play at Lee's Family Forum. Maintains an extensive public recreation system with over 220 miles of trails and 72 parks.
Culture and community. The Water Street District is the revitalized historic downtown and civic heart, home to City Hall, the convention center, galleries, and the Water Street Plaza & Amphitheater, which hosts concerts and festivals. Annual events include the Henderson Heritage Parade and Festival celebrating the city's history. The Ethel M Chocolate Factory (owned by Mars) offers self-guided tours and adjoins a botanical cactus garden with over 300 species. Outdoor and family culture centered on parks, trails, and wildlife viewing.
What makes Henderson distinct. Consistently ranked among the safest large cities in the United States, placing #2 in the SafeWise 2024 Safest Cities report. The city exists because of a WWII magnesium plant, and its name honors a U.S. senator rather than a founder. Despite being a desert suburb, it maintains hundreds of miles of trails and dozens of parks. Serves as home ice for a professional AHL hockey team at Lee's Family Forum.
