Web Design for Hilton Head Island, South Carolina
Hilton Head Island is a shoe-shaped Lowcountry barrier island on South Carolina's Atlantic coast, famous for 12 miles of beach, master-planned resorts, and championship golf. Behind the manicured plantations lies a deep history: it was one of the first places freed Black Americans built self-government (Mitchelville, 1862), and it remains a heartland of Gullah Geechee culture. Roughly 2.5 million visitors a year come for the sand, the golf, and the pine-and-oak canopy that developers deliberately preserved.

About Hilton Head Island
Also known as. Hilton Head. HHI. America's Favorite Island (registered marketing designation). Trench's Island (historic 18th-century name).
History. Named for Captain William Hilton, an English sea captain who in 1663 charted a headland near Port Royal Sound that mapmakers labeled 'Hilton's Head'; Native Americans occupied the island seasonally for thousands of years prior. English planters began settling in 1717, growing indigo and rice; on the eve of the Revolution the island's lucrative indigo trade made it one of the wealthier colonial communities. William Elliott II grew the first crop of Sea Island cotton in South Carolina on the island in 1790. During the Civil War the island's Fort Walker fell to a Union fleet and roughly 12,000 troops on November 7, 1861, one of the largest amphibious operations of the war to that point. Mitchelville, one of the first self-governed towns of formerly enslaved people in the U.S., was established on the island during the war; from Hilton Head in May 1865 Union Gen. Quincy Gillmore declared people of the Black race free citizens. The James F. Byrnes Bridge (a two-lane toll swing bridge) opened the island to car traffic in 1956, the same year Charles E. Fraser began developing Sea Pines Resort and launched the modern resort era. The Town of Hilton Head Island incorporated in 1983.
Local economy. Tourism is the dominant industry: about 2.5 million visitors annually, a year-round population near 37,700 (2020) that swells to roughly 150,000 in summer. Golf and resort hospitality anchor the economy; the SERG Restaurant Group is among the largest local employers (over 1,200 employees). The island's earlier economy rested on indigo, rice, Sea Island cotton, shipbuilding, lumbering, and fishing before resorts took over. Real estate and gated resort communities (Sea Pines, Palmetto Dunes, Hilton Head Plantation and others) drive a large share of local commerce.
Culture and community. The RBC Heritage, a PGA Tour event first played at Sea Pines in 1969, is the island's marquee cultural event; the winner earns a tartan 'Heritage Plaid' jacket (an adapted Royal Stewart pattern) and the opening ceremony features the Citadel's regimental pipe band. Gullah Geechee heritage runs deep; traditional Gullah cuisine includes shrimp and grits, okra gumbo over rice, collard greens with ham hock, and sweet potato pie. The annual Gullah Celebration and Gullah Food Festival showcase the descendants of West and Central Africans who preserved their language, crafts, and foodways in island isolation. For 25-plus years, children's performer Gregg Russell played nightly concerts under the Liberty Oak at Harbour Town, a long-running island tradition.
What makes Hilton Head Island distinct. A signature ordinance effectively bars any building from rising above the tree canopy, keeping the island low-rise and hidden in pines and oaks. Roughly 70% of the island, including most tourist areas, sits inside gated communities. To protect nesting loggerhead sea turtles, a town ordinance requires beachfront lighting to be shielded or shut off by 10 p.m. from May 1 to October 31. Geologically it is only a 'half' barrier island: the north end is an older Pleistocene sea island while the south end is a younger Holocene barrier island, giving it its distinctive shoe/foot shape. When developer Charles Fraser found an ancient live oak in the way, he redesigned the entire Harbour Town marina around it rather than cut it down.
