Web Design for Holyoke, Massachusetts
Holyoke is a former mill city on the Connecticut River in western Massachusetts, one of the first planned industrial communities in the United States, laid out in the 1840s around a 4.5-mile canal system that powered dozens of paper mills. In its heyday it produced roughly 80 percent of the writing paper made in the country, earning it the enduring name "The Paper City." It is also the birthplace of volleyball, invented at the local YMCA in 1895, and today is home to the largest per-capita Puerto Rican community in the mainland United States.

About Holyoke
Also known as. The Paper City. Paper City of the World. Birthplace of Volleyball. Queen of Industrial Cities.
History. Area first settled by colonists in the 1600s; the community was known as "Ireland Parish" before incorporation. Incorporated as a town on March 14, 1850, and as a city on April 7, 1873; named for early settler Elizur Holyoke. Designed as a planned industrial city with a grid of numbered and tree-named streets, built around the Holyoke Canal System begun in the late 1840s by the Hadley Falls Company and a granite dam across the Connecticut River. Population peaked around 60,000 in the early 20th century before mid-century deindustrialization; the 2020 population was about 38,000.
Local economy. In the late 19th century Holyoke produced an estimated 80% of U.S. writing paper and hosted the largest paper, silk, and alpaca wool mills in the world; over 25 paper mills once operated. The American Pad & Paper Company (AMPAD) was founded in Holyoke in 1888, and the American Writing Paper Company (merging many rag-paper mills) formed in 1899. After deindustrialization, the economy shifted toward healthcare, education, and hydroelectric power; the Holyoke Gas & Electric municipal utility gives the city among the lowest power costs in Massachusetts. The Massachusetts Green High Performance Computing Center opened in Holyoke in 2012, drawn by cheap, low-carbon hydroelectric power. The Holyoke Mall, built in 1979, is one of the largest shopping malls in New England.
Culture and community. Home to the largest per-capita Puerto Rican population of any U.S. city outside Puerto Rico (about 44-48% of residents), with a designated Puerto Rican Cultural District known as "Lil San Juan"--one of the first such districts in the nation. The Fiestas Patronales de Holyoke celebrates Puerto Rican heritage with four days of live music, dance, and authentic food; El Rincon Boricua is a well-known Puerto Rican restaurant. The Holyoke St. Patrick's Day Parade is one of the largest in the country, reflecting deep Irish roots from the "Ireland Parish" era. Holyoke opened the first farmers market in Western Massachusetts on July 24, 1917. Domino clubs are a notable part of local Puerto Rican community life.
What makes Holyoke distinct. Volleyball was invented in Holyoke in 1895 by YMCA physical director William G. Morgan, originally as a gentler alternative to basketball. The Venturi meter, a device for measuring fluid flow, was invented in Holyoke in 1888 by engineer Clemens Herschel. The Telharmonium, considered the world's first electromechanical musical instrument, was demonstrated in Holyoke in 1906 by Thaddeus Cahill. The 1890 census found Holyoke had among the highest shares of foreign-born residents per capita in the entire United States. One of the first commercial toll telephone lines opened here in 1878, connecting to Springfield.
