Web Design for Idaho Falls, Idaho
The largest city in eastern Idaho sits on the Snake River, where a man-made dam turned modest rapids into the wide, tiered waterfall that gave the city its name and now anchors a scenic downtown River Walk. A former railroad and farm town, Idaho Falls reinvented itself around nuclear science after the National Reactor Testing Station opened in the desert nearby in 1949. Today it is a base camp for Yellowstone and Grand Teton visitors and headquarters of one of the country's largest wellness companies.

About Idaho Falls
Also known as. I.F. Gateway to Yellowstone (Yellowstone-Teton Territory). Eagle Rock (historic name). Taylor's Crossing / Taylor's Bridge (earliest names).
History. First settled in 1864-1865 when a crossing and toll bridge over the Snake River was established at a spot called Taylor's Crossing (also Taylor's Bridge). Renamed Eagle Rock in 1866 after basalt rock formations in the river where roughly twenty eagles nested; the settlement grew as a stage and freight stop. The Utah and Northern Railway reached Eagle Rock in the 1870s-1880s, making it a railroad and livestock shipping hub. Residents renamed the town Idaho Falls in 1891, believing the name would attract more settlers and tourists; the actual falls became prominent only after the river was dammed for hydroelectric power around 1911. The National Reactor Testing Station (now the Idaho National Laboratory site) opened in the desert west of the city in 1949, permanently reshaping the local economy. On January 3, 1961, the nearby SL-1 experimental reactor suffered a steam explosion that killed three military technicians, the only fatal reactor accident in U.S. history.
Local economy. Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is the dominant employer, with thousands of workers between the desert site and its Idaho Falls campus, focused on nuclear energy research. Melaleuca Inc., a major North American wellness and consumer-products company, is headquartered in Idaho Falls. Long a farm-shipping center, the surrounding irrigated Snake River Plain remains one of the nation's most productive agricultural regions, heavy in potatoes and other crops. Regional healthcare is a large employer, anchored by the Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center (EIRMC) and Mountain View Hospital. Tourism tied to Yellowstone and Grand Teton access supports lodging, dining, and outfitting businesses.
Culture and community. The Idaho Falls Chukars play minor-league baseball at Melaleuca Field (built 2007, seats about 3,500), with promotions like Potato Night. The Idaho Falls Spud Kings play junior ice hockey, and the Mountain America Center arena opened in November 2022. High school football's 'Emotion Bowl' is an annual rivalry between Idaho Falls High School and Skyline High School. The Museum of Idaho, opened in 2003, links the historic Carnegie Library and Masonic Temple and hosts traveling exhibits alongside paleontology and Idaho history collections. The Snake River Greenbelt / River Walk offers miles of riverside trails, art installations, and views of the falls. Regional cuisine leans on Idaho potatoes and Mountain West fare; the city serves as a cultural hub for the surrounding agricultural counties.
What makes Idaho Falls distinct. The waterfall that gives the city its name is essentially man-made, created when the Snake River was dammed for hydroelectric power around 1911; before that the site had only rapids. Idaho Falls was originally named Eagle Rock after river rock formations where eagles nested, then changed to Idaho Falls in 1891 as a marketing move to draw settlers and tourists. The nearby SL-1 reactor accident of 1961 remains the only fatal nuclear reactor accident in U.S. history; the reactor vessel was propelled several feet upward by the explosion. Although surrounded by Idaho's famous potato country, the official 'Potato Capital of the World' is neighboring Blackfoot, home of the Idaho Potato Museum, not Idaho Falls.
