Web Design for Indianapolis, Indiana

Indiana's capital and the 'Circle City,' Indianapolis was designed from scratch in 1821 around a central traffic circle and grew into the 'Crossroads of America' where railroads and interstates converge. It is known worldwide for the Indianapolis 500 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the highest-capacity sports venue on Earth, and it honors more war dead in monuments than any US city except Washington, DC.

AppWT works with Indianapolis, IN businesses from Livonia, Michigan, mostly online and travelling as needed.

About Indianapolis

Also known as. Circle City. Crossroads of America. Indy. Naptown.

History. In 1821 the Indiana General Assembly selected a site near the confluence of the White River and Fall Creek to be the new state capital. Surveyors Alexander Ralston and Elias Pym Fordham platted the original one-square-mile grid, radiating outward from a central Governor's Circle (now Monument Circle). When the White River proved too shallow for steamboats and the Central Canal was never finished, railroads instead turned the city into a business, industrial, and manufacturing center. The 'Crossroads of America' slogan (also the Indiana state motto) originally referred to the many railroads that intersected the city in the late 19th century. The 'Circle City' name derives directly from Ralston's 1821 circular central plan.

Local economy. A major life-sciences center, home to pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly and Company, Roche Diagnostics, and Corteva Agriscience. Aerospace and heavy manufacturing anchors include Rolls-Royce North America (about 4,000 workers locally) and Allison Transmission, headquartered in the city (about 3,100 workers). The metro's largest economic sectors include finance, insurance, and real estate; manufacturing; and professional and business services. A logistics and distribution hub befitting its 'Crossroads' interstate convergence, plus a growing tech/marketing-tech sector (major employers include Salesforce).

Culture and community. Home of the Indianapolis Colts (NFL) at Lucas Oil Stadium and the Indiana Pacers (NBA) at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. The Indianapolis 500 IndyCar race runs every Memorial Day weekend, preceded by the 500 Festival Parade. The 'Circle of Lights' holiday tradition, lighting the Soldiers and Sailors Monument, has run since 1962 and draws more than 100,000 people. Local food specialties include the breaded pork tenderloin sandwich (an Indiana staple), sugar cream pie (the unofficial state pie), and St. Elmo Steak House's fiery shrimp cocktail.

What makes Indianapolis distinct. Indianapolis Motor Speedway is the highest-capacity sports venue in the world, with about 257,325 permanent seats and near 400,000 attendance with infield crowds. The Indy 500 is considered the largest single-day sporting event in the world. The track earned the 'Brickyard' name from its original roughly 3.2 million paving bricks; a single yard of them is preserved at the start/finish line. Indianapolis devotes more acreage to war memorials than any US city and is second only to Washington, DC, in the number of war monuments. The whole city was planned from nothing in 1821 around a central circle, unusual among American state capitals.
