Ionia is the county seat of Ionia County, sitting on the Grand River almost exactly midway between Grand Rapids and Lansing. Every July it hosts the Ionia Free Fair, billed as the world's largest free-admission fair, and its downtown is defined by grand 19th-century buildings cut from locally quarried pink Ionia sandstone. The city is also one of Michigan's dominant prison towns, home to a cluster of state correctional facilities.

About Ionia
Also known as. Home of the Ionia Free Fair. Prison City (informal, for its five state correctional facilities).
History. The site was an Odawa village led by Cobmoosa, whose people had planted crops there; New York settlers led by Samuel Dexter Jr. arrived in May 1833 and bought the standing crops from the Odawa, who relocated to the Flat River. Named after Ionia, a historic region of ancient Greece, part of a wave of classical place-names in the region. Platted in 1841, incorporated as a village in 1865, and organized as a city in 1873. Local W.K. Woodward and Company quarries on the south side of the Grand River produced distinctive pink/reddish-brown Ionia sandstone; businessmen John C. Blanchard and Osmond Tower helped form the Lansing, Ionia and Pentwater Railroad to ship the stone regionally. The Michigan Reformatory, originally the State House of Correction, first opened in 1877, beginning Ionia's long identity as a state prison center.
Local economy. The state correctional facilities, chiefly the Ionia Correctional Facility (opened 1987) and the Michigan Reformatory, are among the city's largest employers, located west of downtown along Bluewater Highway and West Main Street. Ionia County holds five state prisons and jails, making corrections a defining local industry. As county seat, Ionia hosts county government offices and the courthouse. The city levies a 1% income tax on residents and 0.5% on non-residents to fund municipal services.
Culture and community. The Ionia Free Fair, held every July, was established in 1915 by then-Ionia mayor (and future Michigan governor) Fred W. Green with partner Fred Chapman; its free admission continues today and it drew an estimated 400,000 guests in 2023. Grammy Award-winning bluegrass musician Billy Strings (born 1992) grew up in the area and attended the Ionia public school system. The restored Ionia Theatre (1931) on West Main Street serves as a downtown cultural and events venue.
What makes Ionia distinct. An unusually large share of the city's counted population is institutionalized in state correctional facilities, a striking census artifact of its prison cluster. The Ionia Free Fair is promoted as the world's largest free-admission fair, and admission has stayed free since 1915. Much of downtown is built from pink Ionia sandstone quarried just east of town and once shipped across the region by rail. The man who founded the Free Fair, Fred W. Green, was a former Ionia mayor who went on to become the 31st governor of Michigan. The city takes its name from ancient Greece's Ionia region.
