History. Dickinson County was organized in 1891 from parts of Marquette, Menominee, and Iron counties, and named for Donald M. Dickinson, U.S. Postmaster General. The iron boom followed 1870s discoveries on the Menominee Range, including John Lane Buell's 1873 exposure of one of the world's richest ore deposits. Iron Mountain was settled in 1878 and incorporated as a city in 1889, taking its name from the local iron ore. The Chapin Mine became one of the world's richest producers, yielding about 27 million tons of ore from 1880 until it closed in 1934. In 1923 Henry Ford established a sawmill and parts plant in adjacent Kingsford, where the population jumped from about 40 to nearly 3,000 in a single year.

Local economy. Iron ore mining on the Menominee Range, led by the Chapin Mine, was the founding industry. Ford's wood-waste operations spawned Kingsford Charcoal, which still uses over a million tons of reclaimed wood annually. During World War II, Ford's Kingsford plant built CG-4A wooden military gliders. Today tourism, outdoor recreation, and heritage preservation anchor the local economy.

Culture and community. Strong Italian heritage (about 20.6% Italian ancestry in 2000), alongside German, Swedish, English, and Cornish roots, expressed through pasties, bocce ball tournaments, and Italian cuisine. Cornish immigrants brought the pasty, a hearty meat-and-vegetable pastry that miners carried underground and warmed on a shovel over candle flame.
