About Johns Creek
Also known as. No single official nickname is widely established. Routinely described as one of the most culturally diverse cities in Georgia. Part of metro Atlanta's affluent North Fulton technology corridor.
History. Incorporated as a city on December 1, 2006, one of Georgia's newer municipalities. The name derives from a creek that appears on maps as early as the 1830s; the stream is generally attributed to Johnson K. Rogers, son of pioneer John Rogers. In the early 1800s the area held trading posts along the Chattahoochee in Cherokee territory, with crossroads communities such as Sheltonville (also called Shakerag) and ferry crossings (McGinnis Ferry and Rogers Ferry) operating by about 1820. A pivotal modern moment came in 1981 when Georgia Tech graduates established Technology Park/Johns Creek along Medlock Bridge and McGinnis Ferry roads, the first use of Johns Creek as a place name and the catalyst for rapid growth. Population reached 76,728 in 2010 and 82,453 at the 2020 Census.
Local economy. Top employers include Alcon (about 1,781 employees), Emory Johns Creek Hospital (about 1,200), Macy's (about 1,057), and freight carrier Saia (about 1,015). The city hosts more than 700 companies and roughly 13,000 healthcare-related jobs, with a strong life-sciences cluster. Long a high-income community, with a median household income around $109,576 recorded in 2010.
Culture and community. The Johns Creek International Festival each April celebrates the city's diversity and drew more than 23,000 visitors in 2017. Founders Week in December marks the anniversary of incorporation, and a Fall Family Festival is held in September. The Johns Creek Symphony Orchestra is described as metro Atlanta's only part-time, fully professional symphony. Asian residents make up roughly 30% of the population, reflecting the city's status as one of Georgia's most diverse.
What makes Johns Creek distinct. Johns Creek has no USPS-assigned ZIP code of its own; residents use codes shared with neighboring areas such as 30005, 30022, 30024, and 30097. The founding Rogers family is connected to famed humorist Will Rogers, a relative of the pioneer John Rogers line. Despite being one of Georgia's larger cities, it did not exist as an incorporated place until 2006, younger than many of its own subdivisions.
