Kalamazoo Charter Township is the fragmented ring of suburb that wraps the north and east edges of the city of Kalamazoo, chopped by a century of annexations into non-contiguous pieces. Born in 1830 as 'Arcadia Township,' it once covered the entire northern tier of the county before spinning off Richland, Cooper, and Oshtemo. Today it holds the Eastwood and Westwood neighborhoods and the Ascension Borgess medical campus along Gull Road.

About Kalamazoo Charter Township
History. Organized July 30, 1830 as 'Arcadia Township,' originally comprising all eight townships in the northern tier of Kalamazoo County. Renamed Kalamazoo Township on March 2, 1836, the same day the village of Bronson was renamed Kalamazoo. Progressively divided as new townships were set off: Richland (1832), Cooper (1837), and Oshtemo (1839). There were 1,373 residents in the township when Michigan achieved statehood in 1837. Later annexations by the cities of Kalamazoo and Parchment split the township into non-contiguous sections; the population was 22,777 at the 2020 census.
Local economy. The 1870s and 1880s brought waves of industry, with paper and furniture production, cart and carriage manufacturing, and celery farming making greater Kalamazoo a regional center of commerce. The Ascension Borgess (formerly Borgess Medical Center) campus on Gull Road is a major healthcare employer, operating a Level II Trauma Center. The township now functions largely as a residential and commercial suburb of the city of Kalamazoo.
Culture and community. The township contains the distinct Eastwood and Westwood neighborhoods, both census-designated places. Community sports include the long-running Eastwood Little League. Its Gull Road corridor carries a deep Catholic institutional heritage tied to the Sisters of St. Joseph, who founded Borgess Hospital and Nazareth College.
What makes Kalamazoo Charter Township distinct. The township is geographically fragmented, split into two non-contiguous main sections plus a sliver connected only by a narrow point across Riverview Drive, all the result of city annexations. It began life under an entirely different name, 'Arcadia,' and once spanned the whole northern third of Kalamazoo County. The surrounding Kalamazoo area's 1800s celery boom earned the region the historic tag 'Celery City.'
