Web Design for Kearny, New Jersey

Kearny is a Hudson County town built on a peninsula between the Passaic and Hackensack rivers and shaped by Scottish and Irish mill workers who arrived in the 1870s. Its deep soccer culture earned it the nickname 'Soccer Town, USA,' and it famously produced three players on the U.S. team that reached the 1990 World Cup. Today it is a diverse community with a strong Portuguese and Brazilian presence.

AppWT works with Kearny, NJ businesses from Livonia, Michigan, mostly online and travelling as needed.

About Kearny

Also known as. Soccer Town, U.S.A. Little Scotland. K-Town.

History. Named after Major General Philip Kearny, a Civil War (and Mexican-American War) commander killed in 1862. The township was created on April 8, 1867 from portions of Harrison Township, and Kearny was incorporated as a town on January 19, 1899. Scottish and Irish immigration surged after the Clark Thread Company (from Paisley, Scotland) opened mills in 1875, followed by Sir Michael Nairn's linoleum works in 1887. The Scottish-American population peaked at roughly 21,000 in the 1960s, more than half the town. The Western Electric Kearny Works operated from 1928 to 1986 and employed up to about 24,000 workers, while local yards built cargo ships in World War I and warships in World War II.

Local economy. Founded on industry: thread mills, the Nairn (Congoleum) linoleum works, the massive Western Electric plant, and riverfront shipbuilding. South Kearny, at the confluence of the Passaic and Hackensack rivers, remains an industrial, warehousing, and port-logistics zone in the Meadowlands. The 1986 closure of the Western Electric works removed a major source of jobs and tax revenue. A thriving Portuguese and Brazilian small-business and restaurant scene now defines much of the local economy.

Culture and community. Kearny is celebrated as 'Soccer Town, USA': John Harkes, Tony Meola, and Tab Ramos, all from the town, helped the U.S. reach the 1990 World Cup, its first since 1950. The semi-pro Kearny Scots won five straight American Soccer League titles from 1937 to 1941. Scottish heritage endures through institutions like the Scots-American Club, alongside a Portuguese Cultural Association. The town has a rich Portuguese and Brazilian food culture, including churrascarias and traditional Portuguese restaurants. HBO's 'The Sopranos' filmed in Kearny, where the Satriale's Pork Store set was located (the building was later demolished), and the 1982 film 'Annie' shot scenes at the NX Bridge over the Passaic River. The population has grown increasingly Hispanic, rising from about 27% in 2000 to roughly 49% by 2020.

What makes Kearny distinct. A town of roughly 40,000 people produced three members of the 1990 U.S. World Cup team, more national-team players than most entire states. Kearny was so Scottish that it was long called 'Little Scotland,' with Scots making up more than half its residents in the 1960s. The very first unofficial United States national soccer team played its debut international match here in 1885. Satriale's Pork Store, an iconic 'Sopranos' filming location, stood in Kearny before it was demolished.
