Kenner is the largest city in Jefferson Parish and the biggest suburb of New Orleans, spread along the Mississippi River and the shore of Lake Pontchartrain. French explorers marked the spot Cannes Brulee, or Burnt Canes, for the reeds local Native people burned to drive out game, and the modern city grew from three river plantations into a bustling gateway anchored by the region's main airport.

About Kenner
Also known as. Cannes Brulee, French for Burnt Canes, the area's original name. Kennerville, the town's 19th-century name.
History. French mapmakers labeled the area Cannes Brulee (Burnt Canes) after New Orleans was founded in 1718, a name drawn from Native Americans burning cane to flush out game. The city was founded in 1855 by Minor Kenner on three plantation tracts, Oakland, Belle Grove and Pasture, and named for the Kenner family; the original settlement was called Kennerville. After the Civil War the area filled with truck farms worked by Italian and German immigrant farmers. Expansion of the interstate system fueled rapid growth in the 1960s and 1970s; Kenner reached a 2020 population of 66,448, making it the most populous city in Jefferson Parish and sixth-largest in Louisiana.

North Kenner is home to a large Honduran and Hispanic community, sometimes called Little Honduras, with its own restaurants and businesses. The Krewe of Endymion, one of the New Orleans area's super-krewes, parades in Kenner during Mardi Gras season. Coconut Beach Volleyball Complex is billed as the largest man-made sand volleyball complex in the United States.
What makes Kenner distinct. The airport named for New Orleans jazz icon Louis Armstrong is actually located in Kenner, not in New Orleans proper.
