History. The name comes from a Native American (Potawatomi/Ojibwe) word variously rendered kinoje or Kenozia, meaning pike or pickerel. European settlers from New York arrived June 6, 1835; the settlement was first called Pike Creek, then Southport in 1837 for its role as a Great Lakes shipping port. Renamed Kenosha and chartered as a city in 1850, with the charter approved by Governor Nelson Dewey; the first free public school in Wisconsin had opened there in 1845. Kenosha was an automotive powerhouse from 1902 to 1988, producing Jeffery, Rambler, Nash, Hudson, LaFayette, and American Motors Corporation (AMC) vehicles. National attention came in August 2020 after the police shooting of Jacob Blake sparked unrest, followed by the Kyle Rittenhouse trial in November 2021.

A wild turkey nicknamed 'Carl the Kenosha Turkey' became the city's unofficial mascot in 2020 before being struck by a vehicle in December 2021. Kenosha was the first U.S. city to color-code its transit routes (1932) and among the first to run electric trolley buses in full service (February 14, 1932). It remains one of the smallest U.S. cities to operate its own streetcar system.
